Homemade Bloody Mary Mix (with canning instructions) « The Runaway Spoon. When tomatoes are is season, or growing on my vines if I’m lucky, I preserve them in any way I can think of. I make sauce, tomato soup base and just plain old puree and stack them up in ziptop bags in the freezer. Sometimes I can whole tomatoes, but now I’ve learned you can freeze them whole for later cooking. This year, I’ve been looking for a new and different idea, and I set my mind on Bloody Mary mix.
I know many people are very happy with, even prefer, the standard bottled mixes. I made a few adjustments to my standard recipe to make it suitable for canning, so a few lucky folks on my list will be getting some for Christmas (let the competition begin). Stick with the basic quantity of vegetables, sugar and lemon juice for storage, but feel free to add more hot sauce, Worcestershire, or stir in a spoonful of prepared horseradish.

For the second year in a row, I am coordinating the DIY contests at the Eat Real Festival in Oakland, coming up this September. So if you're in northern California, and you've got some preserves, pickles, home brew or homemade condiments that you think are the cat's meow, you better get them ready for submission. We'll judge the heck out of them.
Last year, we had a category for infusions and liqueurs, a subject dear to my heart. In building the panel of judges, I sought out cocktailians, mixologists and expert boozehounds of all stripes. Among them was my friend Michael Cecconi, a recent transplant from New York. Cecconi gamely offered up what I considered to be something of a holy grail -- a housemade vermouth recipe, something I had researched but never encountered a recipe that felt right to me. Lansing's Own Beer Hound. Daniel J. Hogan | Wednesday, April 13, 2011 There are beer drinkers and then there are beer aficionados. Paul Starr of Lansing falls into the latter category. He created the website I’m a Beer Hound to share his video reviews of beer. But not just any beer—Michigan made beer. “I officially started [the website] last August,” says Starr. “And I started from the ground up.” Starr cites his passion for Michigan beer as the driving force for creating the site. When it comes to the goal, or mission of I’m Beer Hound, Starr aims “to create an avenue where breweries can talk straight to the customers.” Starr says the ability to narrow cast on the Internet helps him find an interested audience.
Starr’s production schedule is a simple: do as many video reviews as he can in a day, especially when it comes to the round table chats. Postproduction on the round table chats can take some time to edit, however. And Starr’s merchandise can be found off-line too, at the Lansing City Market. Daniel J. G.B.
