Where and How to Develop Clean Energy Projects for Corporate Customers

Hundreds of companies have made ambitious commitments to purchase renewables and green their operations in the coming years -- the challenge is figuring out how. To that end, the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and its Business Renewables Center (BRC) launched a new software platform today that helps buyers and renewable energy developers find economically attractive locations to build clean energy projects in deregulated electricity markets across the U.S. The platform uses publicly available data from market operators, a levelized cost of energy calculation and a proprietary algorithm to model hypothetical project revenue. The software can produce an estimated value calculation for approximately 4,300 grid connection points, across all seven U.S. independent system operators and 39 states.

The tool will be available to the BRC’s more than 200 members. Abbott: Significant. UGE Case Studies. REI Goodyear Distribution Warehouse. Hurricanes and wind are frequent concerns among those seeking to install solar panels in Southwest Florida, and many people have heard about Miami-Dade hurricane wind code requirements.

Do Solar Panels Meet Miami-Dade Hurricane Wind Requirements?

It stands to reason that people want solar panels installed that meet the most stringent hurricane wind building codes in the country. The concerns usually involve roof leaks and integrity of the roof itself. We saw Hurricane Charley pass through the area a little over 10 years ago with 150 mph winds, making it a strong Category 4 hurricane and at the time the second most powerful to hit the U.S. since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. From that experience, we know what the likely outcome will be when strong hurricane winds hit homes with solar panels. Businessinsider. The Design Basics for Solar Parking Lots You Need to Know - Borrego Solar

For years, solar photovoltaics (PV) have proven to be a smart choice for parking facilities for a variety of reasons. With the growing trend of installing plug-in electric vehicle charging stations in some parking lots and garages, energy usage and operating expenses have also increased, making solar PV parking lots a solution for facility owners looking to counteract the increase in energy demand. Shade structures can be a great addition to any parking lot, as they provide numerous benefits as well as the potential to carry solar panels. Adding shade structures to a parking lot can reduce lighting costs through the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting under the structures in place of the often low-efficiency light poles in many lots. Working as a subcontractor for SunEdison, Solaire installed a series of double-cantilevered supports of its own design with photovoltaic panels that will supply approximately 380 MWh of electricity per year, equal to about 25% of the store’s needs. Whole Foods was committed to taking an environmentally conscious approach to its new location, and the parking lot was the only viable option for a substantial solar installation. The rooftop of the store had been staked out for an organic garden, and the urban site had no room to spare for a conventional ground-mount array.

An interesting aspect of the site is that it overlooks the Gowanus Canal. As part of its green approach, Whole Foods decided to try to reduce water runoff from the location into the waterway.
