By John Maeda | 5:16 PM December 1, 2009 Stereotypes abound about artists: they range from the mild (“they have fuschia-colored hair”), to the absurd (“they starve,”), to the disturbed (“they do things like uncontrollably peeing in the fireplace as depicted in the popular movie Pollock.”).

Granted I know artists with wild-colored hair and others who are certainly struggling to make ends meet, but they all choose to use the restroom. I’ve also met artists who are quite plain-looking and plain-acting CEOs, lawyers, stockbrokers, and scientists. Even as someone who has worked to weaken some of the sillier stereotypes about creative types, I must admit that I’ve carried a few stereotypes around myself.

The three aha’s I received from my conversation with partners Robert Segal and Alicia Rosauer were: Artists constantly collaborate. The example given was the common occurrence of an exhibition with multiple artists showing together, or the so-called “group show.” The Phantom of the Opera. [...]There, turn round...are you glad? You're free now....Oh, my poor Christine, look at your wrists: tell me, have I hurt them?... That alone deserves death....Talking of death, I MUST SING HIS REQUIEM!

"Hearing these terrible remarks, I received an awful presentiment...I too had once rung at the monster's door...and, without knowing it, must have set some warning current in motion. And I remembered the two arms that had emerged from the inky waters....What poor wretch had strayed to that shore this time? Who was `the other one,' the one whose requiem we now heard sung? Erik sang like the god of thunder, sang a DIES IRAE that enveloped us as in a storm. The elements seemed to rage around us. Gaston Leroux, Le Fantôme de l’Opéra. [...]Is someone getting the best of you?

Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store.

She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would let her charge a few groceries. She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to work, they had seven children and they needed food. John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his store at once. Visualizing the family needs, she said: 'Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can.' John told her he could not give her credit, since she did not have a charge account at his store.. Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation between the two. Louise replied, 'Yes sir.' Louise hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it.

The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scales went down and stayed down. Professional Rock Balancing& Rock Stacking ---- Rock Balancing Performances ---- Rock Balancing has been a hobby of mine for years.

Just like sand sculpture turning from a passion to a profession... Professional Rock Balancing has turned into a performance art that has proven very rewarding. Rocks are a dynamic art medium... we can bring a little or we can bring a lot. A load of rocks light enough to fit in a rental car can be enough to contstantly maintain a fun & unique performance art for hours. We continually remake our stacks and, pending the client's approval, allow guests to try their hands at it. Here's a recent rockbalancing performance in Phoenix, AZ at JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa All we use are rocks... no glues... no wires.. no tricks. We never create the exact same stack twice. Okay... here is our " How To Make Rock Stacks " link. Are you ready to balance your own virtual rocks? Click here for free rocks you can stack.

Petra NeumannSheelagh CarpendaleAnand Agarawala PhylloTrees: Phyllotactic Patterns for Tree Layout We explore the use of nature’s phyllotactic patterns to inform the layout of hierarchical data. These naturally occurring patterns provide a non-overlapping, optimal packing when the total number of nodes is not known a priori. PhylloTrees are a family of expandable tree layouts that we developed based on these patterns.

A little bit of Math The word phyllotaxis translates to the arrangement of lateral organs on plants. We use a formula by Helmut Vogel(*) to recreate these patterns for the layout of hierarchical data. This applet shows which parameters can be used to adjust the layout of the circles (which will later represent nodes in our hierarchical dataset). Surrealist techniques - Wikipedia, the fre. Surrealism in art, poetry, and literature uses numerous techniques and games to provide inspiration. Many of these are said to free imagination by producing a creative process free of conscious control. The importance of the unconscious as a source of inspiration is central to the nature of surrealism. The Surrealist movement has been a fractious one since its inception.

The value and role of the various techniques has been one of many subjects of disagreement. Some Surrealists consider automatism and games to be sources of inspiration only, while others consider them starting points for finished works. Aerography[edit] Aerography is a technique in which a 3-dimensional object is used as a stencil with spraypainting. Automatism[edit] Automatic drawingAutomatic paintingAutomatic writingAutomatic poetry is poetry written using the automatic method.

Automatic poetry generators exist online, but they do not actually generate automatic poetry in this sense. Bulletism[edit] Calligramme[edit] Home · Ruud van Empel.
