Mason jars! Is there anything they can't do? From beautiful solar-powered lanterns for your back yard to whimsical lights for your home , to the mason jar light fixtures Allison showed us earlier today, these jars have many uses and you should always strive to keep them around, even if it's just to keep some food in them . Laura and David Elden from Georgia were trying to come up with a nice way of lighting their place, when they decided to use Mason Jars and some IKEA bits to hack together a chandelier. They used an IKEA Kroken ceiling-mounted utensil rack , IKEA Hemma black light bulb sets , some Mason jars , and CFL bulbs to get an awesome result. Once the Kroken is mounted on the ceiling, you need to install the Hemma cord sets. http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/diy-mason-jar-chandeliers-easy-141109

I debated sharing this tutorial for a couple-o-reasons. Reason 1. It's a craft that has been around since before I was born and reason 2... it's a craft that has been around since before I was born. I feel like I might be a 100 years old at this point. My crows feet asked for slippers the other day cause they were getting cold. Since it's new to me I figure it's got to be new to someone else too so I am doing it anyway!

Chris decided to lend a hand to the dry stone walling team It was my first attempt at the black art of dry stone walling. Piling rocks on top of each other to build walls. No cement, nothing to bind them except the weight of the rocks and the skill of the waller in linking the intricate shaped rocks into infinite combinations; a 3d jigsaw stretching miles into the distance. I was spending a morning with a team working for the Fix the Fells project. Horla Varlan This week, the OCW Consortium is holding its annual meeting, celebrating 10 years of OpenCourseWare . The movement to make university-level content freely and openly available online began a decade ago, when the faculty at MIT agreed to put the materials from all 2,000 of the university’s courses on the Web. With that gesture, MIT OpenCourseWare helped launch an important educational movement, one that MIT President Susan Hockfield described in her opening remarks at yesterday’s meeting as both the child of technology and of a far more ancient academic tradition: “the tradition of the global intellectual commons.” http://blogs.kqed.org/mindshift/2011/05/10-open-education-resources-you-may-not-know-about-but-should/

Enjoying a big bounty of herbs from the garden this year? Fresh is best when it comes to cooking with them, but here are ten easy ways you can preserve them for year-round use (along with a nifty tip at the bottom of the page for crushing them fast). Air/Hang Dry Method : If you have the space and the time, you can tie small bunches together (about 4 or 5 cleaned stems) and hang them upside down in a dark, warm, well ventilated area. The drying time is about 2 to 4 weeks – you want the leaves to be crispy and easily crumble between your fingers before you pack them for storage.

Zimmerman wrote, saying that he saw a lot of small solar powered chargers being talked about over Earth Day, but there was a big problem: "They're all quite nice, but also quite expensive. I don't think I've seen any for less than $60, and I've not seen one that really suits my style." So, he came up with his own, using one of our favorite reusable items -- the ever wonderful Altoids tin.
