It’s easy to take electricity for granted.

The Smart Grid

But modern life would not be possible without it. To keep it going, we need more efficient ways to manage electricity. For over one hundred years, coal and other fossil fuels have been used by power plants to produce the electricity we use every day. The Grid is a network of power lines and substations that carry electricity from power plants to homes and businesses.

Today, the grid has problems. At the same time, today’s grid often relies on a single power source and doesn’t provide detailed information on usage, making electricity difficult to manage. To address these problems in the past, we simply built new power plants. Here’s how… The Smart Grid means adding sensors and software to the existing grid that will give utilities and individuals new information that will help them understand and react to changes quickly. 3D Models of the Human Anatomy. How Traditional Publishing Hurts Scientific Progress. A battle that has raged for over a decade between advocates of open science and publishers of traditional scientific journals is coming to a head.

How Traditional Publishing Hurts Scientific Progress

Eighty five percent of published papers remain locked behind subscription pay walls, accessible only to those affiliated with universities and other large research institutions. But new journals that make everything they publish freely available are growing rapidly. And government efforts to make the results of all publicly funded scientific and medical research accessible to everyone are expanding, despite industry-backed legislative efforts to end them.

Eight videos feature footage from the series and interviews with the performers to illustrate the laws of physics at work. For deeper exploration, each video has a corresponding Study Guide for students and an Activity Guide for teachers, as well as raw video clips of performances which can be used for analysis in the classroom. Circus Physics Videos and Study Guides These eight short videos use circus performers and footage to introduce basic physics concepts to anyone interested in physics, as well as high school students.

Chicken reproductive poster. Cancer is even more complicated than we thought. There's some really interesting—and rather disturbing—research coming out of the UK on the nature of cancer cells and why advanced-stage cancers are so difficult to treat.

Cancer is even more complicated than we thought

Scientists have long known that the same type of cancer can play out in very different ways, from a genetic perspective, in one patient compared to another. But this new research shows that, even within the same patient—even within the same tumor—different samples of cancer cells have more genetic differences than they have similarities. That's a very big deal. It means that cancer cells aren't just cells that grow uncontrollably. They also mutate. For a start, cancer isn’t a single disease, so we can dispense with the idea of a single “cure”. Can you explain the cell division very fast… BPES: BP Educational Service.
