The Arts I grew up watching Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, and Popeye cartoons, because they were regularly shown on the independent stations here in St. Louis. (Disney cartoons weren’t readily available unless the Sunday night Wonderful World of Disney show featured one of them.)

Those cartoons helped develop my love of classical music. Rossini’s overtures were popular with cartoonists, as were Liszt’s Hungarian rhapsodies and Brahms’ Hungarian dances. Music: Rossini’s William Tell Overture Made before the William Tell Overture became identified as The Lone Ranger’s theme, The Band Concert features bandleader Mickey leading an outdoor performance. Music: Brahms’ Hungarian Dances #5, 7, 6 and 17 (they appear in that order) The familiar story of the three little pigs was a popular vehicle for cartoonists. Music: Von Suppe’s A Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna Bugs is the conductor of a musician-less orchestra. Music: Largo al factotum aria from Rossini’s Barber of Seville opera Jamie Frater Close.

You were either married or single. Unwed 18 year old teen mamas didn't exist. Me too. Andre Amador's Playa Paintings are Sandy Works of Art. If you live in San Francisco, California, then you may be lucky enough to come across the art of Andres Amador. He doesn't paint or sculpt. He prefers a medium that is temporary but absolutely beautiful: a sandy beach at low tide. He uses a rake to create works of art that can be bigger than 100,000 sq. ft. He spends hours creating these intricate masterpieces, knowing that the tide will soon come in and wash away his work forever. For Andres, his art is "more about the process and less about the result. " He knows that it will all be temporary. While making his beach mural explorations, he uses a rope as a guide so that he can make the geometric patterns.

When asked WHY he does it, Andre gives the best answer... "The unanswerable question! Consider yourself lucky if you happen to stumble across one of his playa paintings, because it won't be there long. By raking up the wet sand at low tide, he is able to make contrasting sand colors. He even offers his services, helping people propose. AUS-ACA | Vocal Australia.

First, I make a point of addressing them as “philosophers” – a bit cheesy, but hopefully it encourages active learning. Secondly, I say something like this: “I’m sure you’ve heard the expression ‘everyone is entitled to their opinion.’ Perhaps you’ve even said it yourself, maybe to head off an argument or bring one to a close. Well, as soon as you walk into this room, it’s no longer true. You are not entitled to your opinion. You are only entitled to what you can argue for.” A bit harsh? The problem with “I’m entitled to my opinion” is that, all too often, it’s used to shelter beliefs that should have been abandoned.

Firstly, what’s an opinion? Plato distinguished between opinion or common belief (doxa) and certain knowledge, and that’s still a workable distinction today: unlike “1+1=2” or “there are no square circles,” an opinion has a degree of subjectivity and uncertainty to it. Amazing Shadow Sculptures by Tim Noble and Sue Webster | Marvelous. From discarded wood, welded scrap metal, broken tools, cigarette packets, soda cans and piles of trash, Tim Noble and Sue Webster make assemblages and then point light to create projected shadows of people standing, sitting, smoking, drinking or anything easily recognizable. Every debris is precisely set in place, taking into consideration its distance from the wall, and its angle with the spotlight. The result is surprising and powerful as it redefines how abstract forms can transform into figurative ones. More artwork by Tim Noble and Sue Webster can be found in their gallery. Christmas is really creeping up - only 5 weeks to go! Week 3 of A Blog Named Hero's Christmas event is all about decor. I don't really make papercrafted decor items for around the house, except for at Christmastime! I decided to go all out and make something I've never tried before - a Kusudama ball. Kusudama flowers are origami flowers made by folding a square of paper for each petal. I started out by using patterned paper from Lawn Fawn and American Crafts - Amy Tangerine.

The petals all start out as a square of paper: They get folded into petals, then 5 petals are glued together: (you can find a photo tutorial on folding the petals HERE) 12 flowers all folded and ready to assemble - I was a bit worried about glueing them all together, but that bit turned out to be really easy!
