Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System Poster of the Haiti Earthquake of 12 January 2010 - Magnitude 7. Tectonic Summary The January 12, 2010, Haiti earthquake occurred in the boundary region separating the Caribbean plate and the North America plate. This plate boundary is dominated by left-lateral strike slip motion and compression, and accommodates about 20 mm/y slip, with the Caribbean plate moving eastward with respect to the North America plate. Haiti occupies the western part of the island of Hispaniola, one of the Greater Antilles islands, situated between Puerto Rico and Cuba. The location and focal mechanism of the earthquake are consistent with the event having occurred as a combination of reverse and left-lateral strike slip faulting on the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system. The Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system has not produced a major earthquake in recent decades. Sequence of events possibly associated with the Enriquillo fault in 1751-1860 are as follows. June 3, 1770: a major earthquake destroyed Port-au-Prince again and appeared to be centered west of the city.

Japan earthquake: Tsunami hits north-east Japan's most powerful earthquake since records began has struck the north-east coast, triggering a massive tsunami. Cars, ships and buildings were swept away by a wall of water after the 8.9-magnitude tremor, which struck about 400km (250 miles) north-east of Tokyo. A state of emergency has been declared at a nuclear power plant, where pressure has exceeded normal levels. Officials say 350 people are dead and about 500 missing, but it is feared the final death toll will be much higher. In one ward alone in Sendai, a port city in Miyagi prefecture, 200 to 300 bodies were found. The quake was the fifth-largest in the world since 1900 and nearly 8,000 times stronger than the one which devastated Christchurch, New Zealand, last month, said scientists. Thousands of people living near the Fukushima nuclear power plant have been ordered to evacuate. Officials said they might need to deliberately release some radioactive steam to relieve pressure, but that there would be no health risk.
National Earthquake Information Center - NEIC Earthquake Hazards Program National Earthquake Information Center - NEIC The mission of the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) is to determine rapidly the location and size of all destructive earthquakes worldwide and to immediately disseminate this information to concerned national and international agencies, scientists, and the general public. The NEIC compiles and maintains an extensive, global seismic database on earthquake parameters and their effects that serves as a solid foundation for basic and applied earth science research. Earthquake Data Available from the NEIC Share this page: U.S. DOI and USGS link policies apply.
