One of his many galleries is The Idol Makers, which documents the work of Radhakrishna Stpathy, an idol maker, a caster of statues, a master craftsman in Tamil Nadu, India. Chola period bronzes were created using the lost wax technique, which is also know by its French name, cire perdue, and is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artist's sculpture.

Some people loved my selections, some people thought I was well off the mark, but it was clear that there was no way I was going to be able to avoid putting together another list, this time of TV series. It has been a far harder list to compile. Not only because of the vast selection to choose from, but also because I knew from the start that I would be leaving out some shows that a lot of people hold very dear. ASIA SOCIETY: THE COLLECTION IN CONTEXT Bronze Sculpture of the Chola Period The Cholas came to power in the late 9th century, and until the late 13th century, they ruled most of south India, Sri Lanka, the Maldive Islands, and even parts of the Indonesian island of Java from their homeland near Thanjavur (Tanjore) on the southeastern coast. They also maintained diplomatic ties with countries as distant as Burma (Myanmar), China, and Malaysia. Chola rulers were active patrons, and during their reign, poetry, drama, music, and dance flourished. While the stone sculptures and the inner sanctum image empowering the temple remained immovable, changing religious concepts during the 10th century demanded that the deities take part in a variety of public roles similar to those of a human monarch.

Chola art Shiva as Nataraja, the Lord of the Dance, the most famous subject found in Chola processional bronzes The period of the imperial Cholas (c. 850 CE - 1250 CE) was an age of continuous improvement and refinement of the Dravidian art and architecture. They utilised their prodigious wealth earned through their extensive conquests in building long-lasting stone temples and exquisite bronze sculptures. Introduction[edit] The Cholas continued the temple building traditions of the Pallava dynasty, who were themselves influenced by the Amaravathi school of architecture. The Cholas in addition to their temples, also built many buildings such as hospitals, public utility buildings and palaces. Early Chola Period[edit] Pallavas were the first recognisable South Indian dynasty who indulged in the pursuit of architectural innovations. Vijayalaya Choleswaram The early Cholas built numerous temples. The Koranganatha Temple at Srinivasanallur near hirapalli is an example of the period of Parantaka I.

That is Alexa Meade. Alexa Meade is a 23-year-old artist based in Washington, DC area. She spent four summers interning on Capitol Hill and in 2008 was a press staffer on the Obama Campaign. She graduated in 2009 from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She never attended art school nor has she ever taken advanced painting courses. She applies acrylic paint to the surfaces of people, objects, and walls in a broad brushstroke that mimics the appearance of brushwork in a painting in a technique that she innovated.
