Save Your Union

In May, the University of London announced that it was shutting down its students union – ULU – from August 2014, and replacing it with a management run services centre. We are calling on students and activists from across the country to mobilise for a demonstration on Wednesday November 13th to fight these proposals and present an alternative vision for our campuses and our education. Assemble at 12 noon at ULU. ULU will also be running a referendum for all of its members on the future of ULU. We will be challenging University management to be bound by its outcome. NATIONAL MOBILISATION: 13th November 1. The University of London has no right to shut down its students’ union. Student unions only exist because we fight for their existence.

We want to see ULU’s building and activities continue as a student union which represents all students in London. 2. 3. Save Your Union. PETITION: Save the University of London Union. On Friday 3rd May, the University of London announced that it was shutting down its students’ union.

PETITION: Save the University of London Union

The University of London Union has been at the heart of student life in London for decades. It represents more than 120,000 students, and is the only London-wide representation that students currently have. This decision has been taken after the outcome of an internal review. The University plans to turn this iconic building into a management-run student services centre, abolish all campaigns and representation, and shut down any democracy in how our spaces and services are run. Under the University's plans, clubs, societies and sports will be under threat, and students will have no control over services that ULU runs – from cafes and bars to rooms and facilities.

Elected officers and campaigns would no longer exist. These plans would depive students of a key student-run institution. London's famous student union faces threat of abolition. Student protests, including this one in November 2011, start out at ULU.

The move comes as the result of an internal review, on which no student sat. ULU represents more than 120,000 students and has been a focal point for the student movement in recent years as it's fought the government on fees and cuts and campaigned for workers' rights. Almost every demonstration of students in London starts at ULU. Most recently, ULU has turned its energies towards creating a London-wide tenants' union, to fight against privatisation and the housing crisis, and act as an organising base for students and others to challenge spiralling rents and appalling conditions.

The University of London's collegiate council has voted to take over the union's headquarters in Bloomsbury from next summer. The building has been used by aspiring student politicians, musicians, journalists and activists for decades and was a key focal point for protests against tuition fees and education cuts in 2010.

The council proposes to replace the union with a student centre offering many of the same services, including a swimming pool, fitness centre, shops, cafes and bars.

THE: ULU closure backed by London college leaders

Members of the university’s collegiate council voted today to approve the review’s recommendations, which said Europe’s largest student union should be wound up and its Bloomsbury headquarters put in the university’s hands. Instead, it is proposed there will be a refurbished student centre offering the same services, including a swimming pool, fitness centre and bars. ULU’s role in running London-wide sports services would likely be transferred to another body, possibly British Universities and Colleges Sports, while its campaigning function could be run by the National Union of Students.

Paul Webley, director of Soas, University of London, who led the review, said many of ULU’s functions were now obsolete because individual colleges now had their own thriving student unions. jack.grove@tsleducation.com. Police state actors. We the undersigned unreservedly condemn the arrest of Michael Chessum, president of the University of London Union, for allegedly organising a demonstration apparently contrary to the Public Order Act 1986.

His arrest follows media revelations that Cambridge police officers have been attempting to pay undergraduates to inform on student “activists” and the arrest in the ULU building itself of a student involved with the 3Cosas Campaign. We believe it is time to reiterate the basic position that universities are centres of learning and we condemn the police’s increasing role in stifling legitimate protest on university campuses.
