Jim Abbott was used to dealing with uncomfortable social situations; in some ways, they were all he’d ever known. As a child who’d been born without a right hand, he had quickly learned that he looked different, but no matter how hard he tried to hide it, everyone knew.

“I felt the teasing and the bullying of the playground,” he told CNN Sport. “I keenly felt the awkward second glances in the school hallways and classrooms.” He learned to survive and then thrive, but many years later, shortly before his 26th birthday, things were suddenly awkward again. It never really occurred to Abbott that he had a disability; at least, it never really occurred to him that there was anything he couldn’t do. “I loved all sports. Abbott recalls that he spent much of his childhood tucking his stump into his pocket, trying to put others at ease: “I know that it was a big part of my life. “I had some pretty serious anxiety about that game,” Abbott said in 2013. Abbott tries not to hide his stump anymore. Athelstan, first King of England - Sept 4, 925. Athelstan, first King of England - Sept 4, 925. On this Day in American history, September 3, 1901 — Alabama’s New Constitution Bars Interracial Marriage and Mandates Segregated Schools On September 3, 1901, Alabama adopted a new state constitution that prohibited interracial marriage and mandated separate schools for black and white children.

The state constitutional convention’s primary purpose was to legally disenfranchise black voters and the new constitution included several electoral policies to intentionally and effectively do that. Because the Fourteenth Amendment prohibited race-based disenfranchisement, the discriminatory policies had to appear to be race-neutral but be applied with bias.

The constitution called for the appointment of three registrars from each county who were expected to act with an intent to minimize African American voter registration. Prior to the enactment of the new constitution, there were approximately 75,000 registered African American voters in Alabama. About William Eric Waters, aka Easy Waters. Last week I referenced Earl Spencer’s eulogy of his sister, Diana, Princess of Wales, and I think it’s a significant enough speech that it bears a closer look today, the 20th anniversary of its address and the Princess’s funeral.

For those unfamiliar with it, at first blush it may seem fairly innocuous, albeit a fitting and lovely tribute, but there’s actually quite a bit going on here when you pull it apart. It also needs to be put in context. The Earl is the youngest of the Spencer siblings and the only male, fairly key when titles and land pass through men and not women. He and Diana were close in their youths, bonded as the only children living at home during their parents’ divorce. Once Diana married into the Royal Family they remained friendly, but certainly saw less of each other. By the time of Diana’s death in August 1997, the relationship had still not been wholly repaired and the Earl was actually in the middle of his own divorce.

September 24, 1991 - The Designer of Nirvana’s Nevermind Cover on Shooting Babies and Working with Kurt Cobain | The Work Behind The Work. When it was released in 1991, Nirvana’s Nevermind sent shockwaves through the music world. It brought alternative rock to the mainstream and almost overnight made Nirvana the biggest band in the world.

The record went on to sell over 30 million copies and is widely considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time. Part of Nevermind’s success was almost certainly due to its incredible cover, created by Robert Fisher. The cover now features in the Museum of Modern Art’s collection and is regarded as a design classic. But before Nevermind’s release, Nirvana were an unknown band and Fisher was an equally unknown graduate working at Geffen. He explains what happened next. “I was hired as a designer out of art school and I worked my way up to an art director position. After meeting with the band, Fisher learned that Kurt Cobain already had a vision for the cover. “Kurt wanted a baby being born underwater. “We thought ‘Ok, we’ve gotta make it more than just a baby underwater’. Man Pictured on Nirvana's 'Nevermind' Cover Sues, Alleging Child Porn.

Spencer Elden, the man whose unusual baby portrait was used for one of the most recognizable album covers of all time, Nirvana‘s “Nevermind,” filed a lawsuit Tuesday alleging that the nude image constituted child pornography. The album cover depicts Elden underwater in a swimming pool as a then-infant with his genitalia exposed. The image has generally been understood as a statement on capitalism, as it includes the digital imposition of a dollar bill on a fishhook that the baby appears to be enthusiastically swimming toward. Non-sexualized nude photos of infants are generally not considered child pornography under law. However, Robert Y. “Defendants intentionally commercially marketed Spencer’s child pornography and leveraged the shocking nature of his image to promote themselves and their music at his expense,” reads the lawsuit, filed in the U.S. In 2016, the last time Spencer recreated the pose as an adult, he told the New York Post, “The anniversary means something to me.

It makes me feel I can look the East End in the face” – Queen Elizabeth In September of 1940, Londoners were in the midst of a Nazi bombardment that became forever known as the Blitz. On September 10, an air raid completely destroyed the Royal Chapel at Buckingham Palace. It was the third day in a row that the palace had been hit. King George VI, father of the current Queen, Elizabeth II, wrote a note on a photo depicting some of the damage inflicted by the attack that day: “Bomb exploded 1.25 a.m. And there was more to come. Eventually the teenage Princesses Elizabeth (the present Queen) and her younger sister Margaret were sent to the relative safety of Windsor Castle, but the King and Queen resolutely remained in residence at Buckingham Palace.

Fiches actu agenda 30 09. Petition for Woman Suffrage from Frederick Douglass Jr. and Other Residents of the District of Columbia. Wealthy white women were not the only supporters of woman suffrage. Frederick Douglass, a former slave and leader of the abolition movement, and his children were also advocates. Douglass attended the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848; and in an editorial published that year in his newspaper, The North Star, he wrote, "...in respect to political rights...there can be no reason in the world for denying to woman the elective franchise... " By 1877, when he was U.S. marshal for the District of Columbia, Douglass's family was also involved in the movement.

His son, Frederick Douglass, Jr.; daughter, Rosetta Douglass Sprague ("Mrs. Nathan Sprague," a member of the National Association of Colored Women (NACW)); and son-in-law, Nathan Sprague, all signed this petition to Congress for woman suffrage "...to prohibit the several States from Disfranchising United States Citizens on account of Sex. " In addition, a growing number of black women actively supported woman's suffrage during this period.

Celebrate National Crush Day 2023: A Tribute to Recycling and Sustainability. On September 27th, the world celebrates National Crush Day, emphasising the essence of recycling, particularly aluminum cans. It's a day to remember that recycling doesn't just keep our environment clean but also significantly reduces carbon emissions, conserves energy, and minimises waste. Cans have an extensive history that stretches back to the late 18th century.

When Napoleon sought a way to preserve food for his troops, it was Nicolas Alpert, a visionary Frenchman, who introduced the sterilisation process, laying the foundation for the canned goods we recognise today. Shortly after, British merchant Peter Durand was granted a patent by King George III for food preservation using tin cans. And as history rolled on, by the mid-20th century, cans became a ubiquitous presence in every American household, used for everything from preserving tuna to storing motor oil. Fast forward to today, and the U.S. boasts of recycling approximately 105,784 aluminum cans every minute!
