Clear skies reveal water on distant Neptune-sized planet. 24 September 2014Last updated at 15:21 ET Artwork: The exoplanet HAT-P-11b is four times the size of Earth, or about the same size as Neptune A cloud-free atmosphere has allowed scientists to pick out signs of water vapour on a distant planet the size of Neptune: the smallest "exoplanet" ever to reveal its chemical composition.

Previously, only larger, Jupiter-like giants have been studied in this way. Working with three space telescopes, astronomers deduced the presence of water by measuring the colours of light the planet absorbed when it passed in front of its star. The find appears in the journal Nature. It was made by a team of researchers led from the University of Maryland, US. The planet, designated HAT P-11b, orbits a sun in the constellation Cygnus some 124 light-years - about a quadrillion kilometres - from Earth. The scientists studied the planet's atmosphere with the aid of the US space agency's Hubble, Spitzer and Kepler telescopes.

David Cameron pledges tax cuts 'for 30m people'

In a speech which ended his party's conference, the PM said that he would raise the tax-free allowance from £10,500 to £12,500 by 2020. He also said the threshold for the 40p income tax rate would be raised from £41,900 to £50,000 by the end of a five year Conservative government. The changes would back people who "do the right thing", he said. In his speech in Birmingham, Mr Cameron also said: BBC political editor Nick Robinson said it was a "highly personal" speech. "The prime minister was almost saying: 'You may not like me or my party but you have a simple choice between me and Ed Miliband.' Both tax reform proposals were given lengthy ovations. Increasing the personal allowance would take one million of the lowest-paid out of income tax and give a tax cut to 30 million more, Mr Cameron said. ZMapp is one of the drugs that is being rushed into trials in the epidemic, along with other drugs that will need more safety data in animals and humans before they are administered to patients. There have been very few doses available and stocks have all been used up, but the San Diego-based company behind ZMapp is pressing ahead with the manufacture of more supplies. It is not an easy drug to make, however. It includes three man-made antibodies to the virus which are grown in tobacco leaves and take months to produce. There is no proven drug treatment for Ebola viral disease. William Pooley, the British nurse evacuated to the UK with Ebola, also received ZMapp and survived, but a Liberian doctor, Abraham Borbor, who was given the drug died. ZMapp performed well in animal trials.
