Meet the thumb-sized $23 PC
The Raspberry Pi USB computer is tiny, and the man who made it intends to manufacture it so cheaply he says it could be given away to school children. Advertisement: Story continues below Created by UK game developer David Braben, the computer is about the size of a typical USB stick and will cost £15 ($23). With its USB port on one side and HDMI port on the other, it can function as a real PC. Having both those ports allows you to connect a keyboard and monitor respectively. Surprisingly, there’s enough room for a 700 MHz ARM11 processor, 128 MB of RAM and OpenGL graphics with enough power to display 1080p video.Samsung's Series 9 laptop is a direct assault on Apple's ultra-portable MacBook Air and after using one for a week I've fallen in love with the sleek metal chassis, which Samsung claims is made out of the same material used to build planes. A side view shot. Photo: Supplied Simplicity is the key to this laptop's aesthetic appeal. When closed it is just 16.3mm thin and there are no garish stickers or ports causing unnecessary clutter. Instead, the ports are hidden under pull-down panels.

The Full Moon Home Screen
Reader Bill brings us this week's featured home screen, complete with lots of system info and a very large, rather pretty weather widget. Bill explains his Android setup the best, so I'll just leave it to him: This is my main home screen on my Evo 4G. I'm using Cyanogenmod 7 with the Honeybread theme which includes the honeycomb wallpaper. We've shown you how to build a Hackintosh with enough power to rival a Mac Pro, but for those of you who want a still powerful Mac on a budget you can build a Hack Mini. We'll show you what you need to build it and walk you through the entire OS X installation. Hackintoshing used to be a complicated process, but since Hackintosh expert tonymacx86 came around it's gotten a lot easier. While I've been hackintoshing netbooks for awhile, I always shied away from building a machine because I was concerned about stability issues.

Battery recyclers use reconditioners to restore old rechargeable batteries once they no longer hold a charge. This DIY reconditioner can squeeze more life out of dead rechargeables and save them from the landfill. To recondition a rechargeable battery, you have to discharge it rapidly, then slowly squeeze every bit out of it before attempting to recharge it.

TDSS variants The malware detected by Kaspersky Anti-Virus as TDSS is the most sophisticated threat today. TDSS uses a range of methods to evade signature, heuristic, and proactive detection, and uses encryption to facilitate communication between its bots and the botnet command and control center. TDSS also has a powerful rootkit component, which allows it to conceal the presence of any other types of malware in the system. Its creator calls this program TDL. Since it first appeared in 2008, malware writers have been perfecting their creation little by little.

We've heard recently of CISPA, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act , a bill currently making its way through Congress that many are calling the latest incarnation of SOPA. Reader SolKeshNaranek points out an article at Techdirt explaining exactly why this bill is bad , and how its backers are trying to deflect criticism by using language that's different and rather vague. Quoting: "The bill defines 'cybersecurity systems' and 'cyber threat information' as anything to do with protecting a network from: ' (A) efforts to degrade, disrupt, or destroy such system or network; or (B) theft or misappropriation of private or government information, intellectual property, or personally identifiable information. ' It's easy to see how that definition could be interpreted to include things that go way beyond network security — specifically, copyright policing systems at virtually any point along a network could easily qualify."

AMD Llano desktop APU gets reviewed: the best integrated graphics in town -- Engadget
AMD is due to release a batch of new Llano APUs next month that are specifically tailored to desktops rather than laptops . The most powerful among them will be the 2.9GHz A8-3850, which has already caused a stir on the review circuit for one simple reason: it pulls off a brutal "one shot one kill" on Intel's HD 3000 integrated graphics. AnandTech raised an impressed eyebrow at the fact that all its benchmarking games were playable on the $135 AMD chip, which roughly doubled frame rates in titles like Modern Warfare 2 , Bioshock 2 and World of Warcraft compared to the more expensive Sandy Bridge i5 2500K. TechSpot declared the APU its "new budget king," with graphical performance "on another level" compared even to an i7. However, the superlatives quickly evaporated once reviewers shifted their focus to the CPU.Remember the good old days when a gigabyte was considered a lot of space ? Improvements in hard disk technology have allowed the humble magnetic drive to reach the dizzying heights of multiple terabytes of storage , but Cisco foresees a future that's a few orders of magnitude more impressive. Pinpointing 2015 as the commencement of what it calls the zettabyte era, the company has put together a handy infographic to show us just how much data can be fit into one: you can alternatively think of it as the equivalent of 250 billion DVDs, 36 million years of HD video, or the volume of the Great Wall of China if you allow an 11oz cup of coffee to represent a gigabyte of data. So "zetta" must be Greek for one hell of a lot, but what Cisco expects is that we'll be pushing that much information around the web each year by 2015. Any bets on how many exabytes of it will be to stream videos of cats diving into cardboard boxes?

Of course there will be bugs and software issues, but that’s part of being one of the pioneers. Every bug found by a user and reported to the system developers, is another chance to OS perfection. For the purpose of this tutorial on how to download Google Chrome OS (and how to install it), we are going to use the “Flow” Chromium OS build from Hexxeh, which can be downloaded here . Thanks to Hexxeh, who tweaked the Google Chrome OS source code, the OS can be easily installed from a 2 or 4GB flash drive in a matter of minutes.
