Vitamin D levels predict survival chances for sick cats, study finds

Researchers found that higher levels of vitamin D are linked to better survival chances for hospitalised pet cats. Cats could prove useful for investigating the complex link between vitamin D and a range of health problems that also affect people, the researchers say. The findings may also help vets to give owners better advice about their pets' prognosis, according to researchers at the University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.

Researchers examined blood samples from 99 pet cats that were admitted to the University's Small Animal Hospital with life-threatening conditions. With the owners' permission, the team checked the levels of vitamin D in the cats' blood on admission. They found that cats with higher levels of vitamin D in their blood were more likely to be alive 30 days after admission than those with the lowest levels. The study is published in the journal PLOS ONE. Vétoquinol: Anti-Infective Veterinary Medicine for Feline Herpes Virus (FHV) & Canine Otitis Externa. In fact, up to 97% of cats have serological evidence of exposure to FHV-1. Following recovery from primary infection, up to 80% of cats become carriers. Although carriers can remain asymptomatic for long periods of time, they harbor the virus in the nerve cells. Cats who contract FHV-1 remain lifelong carriers of this highly contagious virus and can easily pass it on to un-infected cats through: Discharge from the nose, eyes, or mouth Litter boxes, water dishes, food, etc. From the dormant state, FHV-1 may be reactivated and shed throughout the infected cat's life, especially at times of stress. While there is no cure, you can help your patients get over primary infection and reduce the severity and frequency of recurrences by prescribing L-lysine. Herpes viruses are dependent on arginine, an amino acid that is essential to the development of viral protein.

Itraconazole. (for veterinary information only) AVAILABLE IN 100 mg CAPSULESOR AS ORAL SOLUTION The development of oral medications to be used in the treatment of invasive fungal infections has represented an immense medical breakthrough.

Itraconazole

With oral treatment available, human patients no longer require hospitalization several days per week for intravenous treatment of their disease; a more normal and productive lifestyle is now possible. Further, the toxicity profiles of the newer oral drugs represents vast improvement over those of the injectables. Ketoconazole was the first such oral antifungal drug but it had room for improvement regarding its side effect potential. Itraconazole works by inhibiting the fungal enzymes that produce “ergosterol,” an important component of the fungal cell wall. Itrafungol Oral Solution - Pet Drugs Online.
