Art. Art is a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities, usually involving imaginative or technical skill. In their most general form these activities include the production of works of art, the criticism of art, the study of the history of art, and the aesthetic dissemination of art. This article focuses primarily on the visual arts, which includes the creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts; however, like the decorative arts, it involves the creation of objects where the practical considerations of use are essential—in a way that they usually are not in a painting, for example.

The nature of art, and related concepts such as creativity and interpretation, are explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.[8] Creative art and fine art Works of art can tell stories or simply express an aesthetic truth or feeling. One man, 100,000 toothpicks, and 35 years: An incredible kinetic sculpture of San Francisco. Thirty five years ago I had yet to be born, but artist Scott Weaver had already begun work on this insanely complex kinetic sculpture, Rolling through the Bay, that he continues to modify and expand even today.

The elaborate sculpture is comprised of multiple “tours” that move pingpong balls through neighborhoods, historical locations, and iconic symbols of San Francisco, all recreated with a little glue, some toothpicks, and an incredible amount of ingenuity. He admits in the video that there are several toothpick sculptures even larger than his, but none has the unique kinetic components he’s constructed. Via his website Weaver estimates he’s spent over 3,000 hours on the project, and the toothpicks have been sourced from around the world: I have used different brands of toothpicks depending on what I am building. I also have many friends and family members that collect toothpicks in their travels for me. See the sculpture for yourself at the Tinkering Studio through the end of June.

As I was starting out in photography this often lead me to additional purchases of lenses, software and accessories. But there is something you can do to add the WOW factor to your photos without a trip to the camera shop – panning. It allows you to isolate and focus a moving object while blurring the background. Panning brings life, motion and emotion to what could be an otherwise dull photograph.

Have a look at this cyclist I shot at 1/350 of a second as he raced by me at 20mph. Now let’s look at another cyclist in the same location that I captured while panning him as he raced by. Many people are intimidated by panning but it is a relatively easy technique to master. How to do panning… About Dave: Image. Sky Area. Water. Pen Art (by @baekdal) #design. Written by Thomas Baekdal | Saturday, August 30, 2008 Jennifer Maestre, who should change her name to Jennifer "Maestro", has created these fantastic sculptures out of pencils. Acccording to herself she took "hundreds of pencils, cut them into 1-inch sections, drill a hole in each section (to turn them into beads), sharpen them all and sew them together. " Either she had way too much time on her hands, or just happened to be an incredibly talented art freak. I think it was the freaky art that did it. (via MoCoLoco) Follow: 42Concepts. Forer effect. A related and more general phenomenon is that of subjective validation.[1] Subjective validation occurs when two unrelated or even random events are perceived to be related because a belief, expectation, or hypothesis demands a relationship.

Thus people seek a correspondence between their perception of their personality and the contents of a horoscope. Forer's demonstration[edit] On average, the students rated its accuracy as 4.26 on a scale of 0 (very poor) to 5 (excellent). Only after the ratings were turned in was it revealed that each student had received an identical sketch assembled by Forer from a newsstand astrology book.[2] The sketch contains statements that are vague and general enough to most people.

In another study examining the Forer effect, students took the MMPI personality assessment and researchers evaluated their responses. The Forer effect is also known as the "Barnum effect". ScribblerToo :: Mario Klingemann update :: zefrank. Online : Painting on water (aka paper marbling) MAKE subscriber RabLabit sent us a link to this video of an artist who “paints on water.” What he’s doing is actually paper marbling, a form of “aqueous surface design.” You’ve certainly seen marbled book or journal end-papers, for instance. Those pattens are created using this process. The video is a little… meditative, but the results are lovely and it’s a process I’d never actually seen.

It makes me want to try it. [Thanks, RabLabit!] You can find more info on marbling on Galen Berry’s The Art of Marbling website. More:Driven to tears by sand painting Gareth Branwyn Gareth Branwyn is a freelancer writer and the former Editorial Director of Maker Media. Related.

The Beautiful Surrealist Paintings Of Tetsuya Ishida. The paintings of Tetsuya Ishida address the anxieties of an individual adrift in a world becoming unrecognizable through economic growth and technological advance. His loneliness and crisis of identity are communicated in a series of astonishing canvasses where he is tragically trapped or consumed by his surroundings in a rapidly advancing world where the pressure to conform is often too much to bear.

Although his paintings are wrapped heavily in skepticism, claustrophia and solitude, the works are above all beautiful, touching self-portaits of a man helplessly adrift in a world lacking in meaningful contact with others. Physically and mentally introverted, as he morphs into a supermarket conveyor belt, a microscope or a urinal; rusted, awkward, used and trampled on, his sober gaze and detailed, subdued handling save these paintings from lapsing into modern caricature and moves them into the realm of something far more meaningful.
