This Pekingese is in excellent heath as represented by his full glorious coat. Dull, listless, thin hair coat, if combined with behavioral changes can be a sure sign of low thyroid hormone. Many professional handlers put the new dog on thyroid hormone supplements if symptoms are present. They then test the dog to confirm low thyroid hormone or any other contributing factors. Symptoms of Canine Hypothyroidism Poor hair coat, lethargy, inattentiveness, and weight gain lead the list of symptoms. But there are other symptoms and a dog may exhibit any or all of these classic signs of low thyroid hormone: intolerance to cold, frequent ear infections, behavioral changes such as unprovoked aggression, depression, obsessive behavior, even seizures. Review of the litterature and an attempt to evaluate intake levels of iodine and selenium in dogs with and without lymphocytic thyroiditis. Second cycle, A2E. Uppsala: SLU, Dept. of Clinical Sciences The prime aim of this thesis was to investigate whether high or low iodine intake during certain periods of life was, or was not a strong risk factor for the development of canine lymphocytic thyroiditis (CLT). And secondly, if a high or low selenium intake in a combination with high or low iodine intake also may have an influence on that risk factor.

Feline Hyperthyroidism: Potential Relationship with Iodine Supplement Requirements of Commercial Cat Foods. Changes in Thyroid Function in Puppies Fed a High Iodine Commercial Diet. Abstract Abnormally low131I uptakes were noticed in dogs fed with commercial diets at the University Animal Clinic in Buenos Aires, but the total iodine content of eight different commercial diets examined was found to provide an iodine intake above daily requirements.

Changes in Thyroid Function in Puppies Fed a High Iodine Commercial Diet

To investigate this anomaly, 18 dogs were distributed into three groups, fed either: (1) a home-prepared diet; (2) a commercial diet; (3) a home-prepared diet supplemented with potassium iodide equivalent to that found in the commercial diet. The131I uptake in dogs of groups B and C was significantly decreased, as was basal serum thyroxine (T4) and free thyroxine (FT4), whereas urinary iodide excretion and serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), were increased. The thyroid releasing hormone (TRH)-TSH test showed an increased response in dogs from group B, while the TRH-T4test was inhibited in both groups B and C. Keywords. IODINE BENEFITS. Thyroid Tumors in Dogs and Cats

Although thyroid tumors in dogs are rare, they are most likely to be malignant. Clinical signs are usually the result of impingement on surrounding structures, and clinical hyperthyroidism is rare. In contrast, hyperthyroidism resulting from benign thyroid proliferation is relatively common among older cats. Malignant tumors are extremely uncommon but have high metastatic potential. Irrespective of the tumor's ability to produce functional thyroid hormone, scintigraphy is often helpful in the diagnosis and staging of thyroid tumors in all three species. Special emphasis will be put on recent developments such as the role of iodine deficiency in the development of brain damage and mental retardation, assessment of the iodine status of a population and current worldwide epidemiological data, strategies for control and monitoring of the iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), as well as potential side effects of excessive iodine intake. Up to date information on IDD can be obtained by visiting the website of the International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders Global Network (ICCIDD) www.iccidd.org Iodine (atomic weight 126.9 g/atom) is an essential component of the hormones produced by the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormones, and therefore iodine, are essential for mammalian life. Healing the Body - Iodine. Optimum Levels of Iodine. Iodine. Introduction Guy Abraham MD, former professor of obstetrics, gynecology and endocrinology at UCLA School of Medicine, has written a series of papers about iodine that has drastically changed my thinking about its role in health and the prevention and treatment of disease.

Iodine

I had been impressed by Dr. Abraham’s previous work, which showed that vitamin B6 and magnesium could be very helpful to women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and was eager to learn what he had to say about iodine. Through a series of articles (See website link at the end of this article), termed “The Iodine Project,” Dr. Abraham has proposed that the optimal daily dose of iodine for a person is approximately 12.5 mg, which is 100 times the RDA of 0.125 mg. He believes that the current prevailing medical opinion that more than 2 mg a day of iodine is toxic is wrong. The commonly accepted medical opinion is that iodine’s only role in the body is to help make thyroid hormones.
