Arthur Conley : Sweet Soul Music (1967) Take Me To The River: A Southern Soul Story 1961-1977. I am proud to announce this release because Tony Rounce from Ace Records who co-ordinated the 3 CD package asked me to annotate 25 of the featured tracks on the CD. I must admit to being honoured to have been involved in what has turned out to be a worthy celebration of the southern soul genre of music. The package is a wonderful selection of music backed up with stunning art work and photographs. Here is the press blurb from Tony: The term Southern Soul usually evokes images of either some small studio in the Southern US states in the mid-60s to mid-70s, where the musicians are working at getting a suitable groove for a singer to pour heart and soul into some true-to-life lyrics, or a hot, sweaty chitlin’ circuit club, where the crowd is urging acts on to ever greater heights of emotion over the relentless groove of the house band.

It’s important to stress that what this 3CD set offers is very much “A” Southern Soul Story, and not “The” Southern Soul Story. Soulmaster Archives. In 1965 AM radio stations across the nation were playing contemporary top 40 music. This music was mainly: Beach Boys, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Temptations, Four Tops, Supreams, etc. There was a heavy British Influence of music in this country and also a new sound called Motown. Black radio stations on the other hand, were playing “Soul Music” such as Sam and Dave, Dyke and the Blazers (Funky Broadway), Eddie Floyd (Knock On Wood), James Brown, JJ Jackson, Rufus Thomas, and The Barkays, just to mention a few. The Soulmasters Band played music mainly from Black radio stations such as WILA in Danville, VA and WLAC in Nashville Tenn. This “Soul Music” was new to white people in the Danville VA area.
