Yes, if you’re paying someone else to put your system together for you. Now, that seems like kind of a no-brainer for most of us: I certainly don’t feel like I know enough to build my own solar panel array or wind turbine. But folks like Marcin Jakubowski of Open Source Ecology, and Daniel Connell, who created the Solarflower, think that an awful lot of us can build relatively sophisticated technology on our own… if we have the right instructions, and if the materials and tools required are easily available.

Daniel reached out to me last week to share his newest tutorial at SolarFlower.org, which shows you how to build a wind turbine. The turbine uses the ~40% mechanically efficient Lenz2 lift+drag design. Is it safe, though? Impressive! Build this open source DIY wind turbine for $30. Getting started with home wind energy projects can set you back a pretty penny if you buy a finished product, but if you're a little bit handy and don't mind scrounging for materials and getting creative in the garage or backyard, you can try your hand at building one of these DIY wind turbines for about $30 in materials.

Build this open source DIY wind turbine for $30

After all, it is #iheartrenewables week! We've previously covered Daniel Connell's open source concentrated solar collector plans, but now he's back with another great DIY renewable energy project, a vertical axis wind turbine based on the Lenz2 lift+drag design. Connell's design calls for using aluminum lithographic offset printing plates to catch the wind, which he says can be obtained cheaply (or possibly even free) from an offset printing company, and a variety of hardware and a bicycle wheel. Below is a drawing for the wing ribs cut from 3/4" plywood. NOTE: The above drawing shows that only 6 ribs are required, that should actually be 9 ribs required. I originally designed it with only the end ribs in place with a stiffener bracket in the center. The 3rd rib actually makes them much stronger. Wings... The wings are basically built from 3/4" plywood for the ribs and the stringers were cut from treated 2x4's. Above is another shot of the wing frame The rivets are aluminum 1/8" and are 3/4 to 1 inch long. I start by bending a 90 degree angle on the leading edge of the aluminum and rivet it to the top outer leading edge of the wing frame. When the aluminum is riveted to the frame bend the trailing edge to form a seal of sorts to the rear stringer. The alternator for the roof top model is simply a modified version of my 500 watt kit.
