I first heard Eric Ries describe the concepts that later became his best-selling book The Lean Startup during my time at The Lean Enterprise Institute in 2009.

Lean Startups Should Be Lean Cultures, From the Start

When I saw Eric speak, he explained concepts that, while rooted in lessons and practices from Toyota, were about creating a new, more effective approach to entrepreneurship. Seeing how useful this was, I was glad to help arrange an LEI webinar where Eric introduced these ideas to the broader lean community, including manufacturers and healthcare organizations. For those who aren’t familiar, some of the core lean startup concepts include: “Getting out of the building” (ala “Genchi Genbutsu”) to talk face-to-face with real people, potential customers, in their “Gemba,” to deeply understand their important problems that they will pay to solve. This is in stark contrast to the old approach of sitting in an office, dreaming up and creating software or services that we hope or assume people will buy. One of those giants is John Shook. Blank asks if the product could be made to dispense only the company’s packaged treats. “This is a big idea for all the teams, trying to figure out how to increase your lifetime value,” Blank tells the class. “What else . . . can you sell them over time? On the class dashboard, ratings by professors and peers for each presentation appear in bar graph form. While Blank is largely credited with pioneering the lean startup pedagogy, the methodology’s origins go back to the ‘90s, with the 1995 publication of Columbia Business School professor Rita McGrath’s Harvard Business Review article on “discovery-driven planning,” and Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen’s 1997 book The Innovator’s Dilemma.

Is The Lean Startup a prescription for Lean. When we look at a problem, we should devise the best set of methods that we know of to solve the problem.

Is The Lean Startup a prescription for Lean

However, many of us are prisoners of our own tools. How does that happen? It is very simple. If we are a Lean, Six Sigma or even a Theory of Constraints practitioner, we often times become prescriptive to the methods developed for that field. In conversation, you easily pick up which field someone favors just in the nomenclature they use, especially in problem solving. In solving a problem, we all have a tendency to gravitate to what we know best.

These iterations, these trials or as we call them in developing an A3 – countermeasures, reflect our current thinking. Business Plan vs. Business Model vs. Strategy. Eliminate the Blah-Blah-Blah in Startups & Companies! Startup Tools. Startup Tools 1.

Why Lean Canvas vs Business Model Canvas?

Lately, this question has bubbled up in frequency which is why I decided to take the time to outline the thought process that went into creating Lean Canvas. First a quick timeline. Timeline May 2009 I was first exposed to the Business Model Canvas through Alex Osterwalder’s book: “Business Model Generation”. While I found the book beautifully illustrated, I originally dismissed the canvas approach as “too simple”. Jun 2009 It was not until I saw fellow entrepreneur Rob Fitzpatrick’s variation (Startup Toolkit) that incorporated Steve Blank’s worksheets from “The Four Steps to the Epiphany” that I took a more serious look at the canvas.

Aug 2009 I shared my adaptation (Lean Canvas) in a post I published: “How I Document My Business Model Hypotheses”. Design Goals My main objective with Lean Canvas was making it as actionable as possible while staying entrepreneur-focused. I-corps teaching handbook. 5480b219b479596d548b4579.
