Green architecture notes » Favela-Bairro project: Jorge Mario Jauregui Rio de Janiero. Sustainable cities require sustainable communities as well as care for the environment. Brazilian architect, Jorge Mario Jauregui has been working in Rio de Janiero for the last fifteen years to use his skills as an architect to bring infrastructure and community facilities to the informal communities throughout the city known as favelas. Favelas, which house about 20% of the city’s population, have been growing in pockets of unclaimed land throughout the city for the past 100 years. However, since unplanned and originally unsanctioned by the government, these communities lack infrastructure and public social spaces.

Jorge has coined the phrase “favela-barrio” to describe his approach to urban design in the favelas. In a project currently underway, Jorge is creating public space in the Manguinhos favela on existing train tracks that bound the community on one side. My initial MA studies began with rather simplistic sites, in very comfortable areas. Due to this it meant the concepts were also slightly simplistic, as they struggled to draw inspiration from a relatively mundane set of factors and influences.

It was my intention to gradually ramp up the complexity of each project along the course of the MA. Images : Lee Miles I settled on exploring the Rio de Janeiro Favelas as an ideal testing ground for the proposal. The reason being is because it is a new unknown territory for me as I’ve little or no experience of South American culture, so it should prove interesting and dynamic, but also should mean I have no preconceived conceptions as to how the project should work. History of the favelas Rio de Janeiro. Special Reports | Audio slideshow: Faces of the favelas. The French artist JR first made his mark in Rio de Janeiro last year, as giant posters of staring eyes started appearing on buildings in the city's oldest favela. He was drawn there following the controversial deaths of three young men, amid alleged collusion between Brazilian soldiers and a drugs gang.

But now JR's work has made it on to some of Rio's grander structures. Take a tour of the city with the artist himself, and meet the people who inspired him. <table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" width="352" align="center"><tr><td><table cellspacing="1" cellpadding="30" border="0" bgcolor="#cccccc" width="100%" height="33"><tr><td bgcolor="#fafafa"><div class="font-family:Verdana;color:#666666;font-size:11px;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;color:#333333;font-size:18px;font-weight:800;"><strong>Javascript and Flash plug-in required</strong></span><P>Either the Flash plugin was not detected on your computer or the JavaScript features of your brower have been disabled.

Dutch artists Haas&Hahn present their interventionist mural projects at an exhibition in New York's Storefront for Art and Architecture entitled: Painting Urbanism: Learning from Rio. The show displays back-lit photographs and documentary videos of huge-scale rainbow murals painted directly onto apartment block walls in Rio. In collaboration with local residents and youth, the project was a process of inspired urban renewal and community driven; painters were paid and taught how to use different kinds of materials. The resulting murals offer critical ways to reclaim and transform public and private urban spaces. As urban landscapes sprawl across the world, navigating today’s mega-cities is currently the focus of hot debate and the subject of The Endless City and Living in the Endless City, exciting new books co-authored by Ricky Burdett and Deyan Sudjic.

The favelas in Rio are the longest-lived squatter settlements in the world. There are about one billion squatters worldwide, one million of which are in Rio de Janeiro. The architecture of favelas | JungleDrums. Over the days and weeks of January we’ve all been seeing the news about the constant rain and floods that have been happening in Brazil, destroying hundreds of houses and leaving thousands of people homeless, and clueless about their futures. Although not exclusively, inevitably and unfortunately the vast part of the damage happensin favelas, the dwellers of which are year after year confronted with this exact same problem.

Despite the obvious indifference of the government, which hasn`t achieved a respectable success in trying to fix this issue, there are people interested in and inspired by the idea of changing the slums in order to better integrate them into the cities’ life. Creative and innovative solutions for water and energy technology as well as infrastructure proposals – the results of several collaborations between Brazilians and international architects – can be seen at the Informal City of Century XXI exhibition, opening in London from the 20th of January. The rider of the piebald (black-and-white) drum horse, working the reins with his feet, crosses drumsticks above his head in salute. Since 1748 Trooping the Colour has also marked the official birthday of the British sovereign.[1] It is held in London annually on a Saturday in June[2] on Horse Guards Parade by St.

James's Park, and coincides with the publication of the Birthday Honours List. Among the audience are the Royal Family, invited guests, ticketholders and the general public. The Queen travels down The Mall from Buckingham Palace in a royal procession with a sovereign's escort of Household Cavalry (mounted troops or horse guards). The music is provided by the massed bands of the foot guards and the mounted bands of the Household Cavalry, together with a Corps of Drums, and occasionally pipers, totalling approximately 400 musicians. I was browsing Flickr and I found this beautiful example of organizing books by color and the smart guy that managed to do it, is user chotda.

This is a very good way of changing the whole aspect of a bookshelf with a little bit of creativity. I guess you’ll have to pay more attention to the book’s cover from now on if you want to reproduce that effect and have your own rainbow bookshelf. ::Lime in the coconut::: Stairways of hope… In Rio de Janeiro…in an area called Santa Teresa…in a hidden alley is a masterpiece of sorts Artist Jorge Selaron worked tirelessly hands bleeding, penniless. …In the beginning, everyone laughed at me I covered the steps in green, blue and yellow tiles – the colors of the Brazilian flag. Horsley The Museum of Modern Art 's architectural history has been steeped in sleek, elegant modernity but its last couple of major expansions have been widely seen as rather bland and not in the forefront of contemporary architecture. On November 14, 2007, Hines, the Houston-based development concern headed by Gerald D. Nouvel's design is quite breathtaking, bold and a bit bizarre. Is it a deconstructed obelisk? It does not conform to any known building style and that's just what New York City needs more of. A completely asymmetrical design, it has no traditional setbacks and tapers to a point. The announcement indicated that the "project will likely commence pre-sales in late 2008.
