Indigenous Research Methods: A Reading List. Last week I wrote about challenging the dominance of English in writing for research and academia. That theme is also relevant to this post, though here it’s more about challenging Euro-Western epistemologies and methods than the English language itself. Over the last year I have built a personal library of books about, or relevant to, my investigation of Indigenous research methods and ethics. The point of this, for me, is to bring these methods into my scholarship, alongside creative and conventional methods, as appropriate. The point is not to become an ‘expert’ on Indigenous research; for a white British person, that is not, should not be, an option.
At the start of this work, I worried about being extractive, but I found comfort in the words of Margaret Kovach, an Indigenous researcher from Saskatchewan in Canada, who encourages non-Indigenous scholars to help make space for Indigenous methodologies and assess their value on their own terms. Login. AAA Style Guide. Prospectusguide. Writing a Prospectus There are many different kinds of prospectuses for different purposes.
In the humanities, Ph.D. students are asked to submit dissertation prospectuses to their committees; most research grant applications require them; academic job candidates often include short prospectuses with their application materials; and book publishers request them as part of the process of considering a manuscript for publication. Editors of journals and essay volumes may also request a prospectus of a proposed article. These different kinds of prospectuses differ mostly in regard to the length and detail with which the project is described. Dissertation prospectuses can run anywhere from 5 to 30 pages, depending on the amount of detail requested of the student, while grant and job applications generally require brevity (1-2 single-spaced pages for a job application; 3-5 single-spaced pages for many grants). WIS2DOM: Weaving Indigenous and Sustainability Sciences: Diversifying our Methods Workshop This workshop will encourage collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous early career academics and senior scholars from several disciplines and Indigenous community scholars.
It will also allow Indigenous peoples to communicate their ecological understandings to the wider scientific community. In addition, this workshop will give all participants an opportunity to work across cultural and disciplinary understandings to cultivate mutually conducive and appropriate principles, protocols, and practices that address sustainability of resilient landscapes, thereby allowing for greater access to and understanding of Indigenous and sustainability sciences. This replaces the previous style guide, which was released in 2003. AAA uses The Chicago Manual of Style (15th edition, 2003) and Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (11th edition, 2006).
