I have a love of beautiful paper and what I have for you today is nothing short of art! Yulia Brodskaya is a Russian born paper artist who creates the most stunning paper creations. I remember growing up I had my own quilling tool and thought it was pretty fancy to curl a flower or a leaf – but these works by Yulia leave me, quite simply, for dead. The graduating colours, the perfect curves and incredible typography. Yulia has a background in all kinds of paper art – she’s studied origami, textile painting and collage in the UK and eventually pulled together her loves (typography, paper, and highly detailed hand-made craft objects) to create amazing projects for brands around the world- you might even recognise her work from a Myer campaign a few years ago.

Paper is one of the starting points for a wedding celebration and Yulia’s work gives such an inspiration jump off point for the ways you can incorporate it differently into your own wedding stationery. National Geographic is currently holding its annual photo contest, with the deadline for submissions coming up on November 30.

For the past nine weeks, the society has been gathering and presenting galleries of submissions, encouraging readers to vote for them as well. National Geographic was kind enough to let me choose among its entries from 2011 for display here on In Focus. Gathered below are 45 images from the three categories of People, Places, and Nature, with captions written by the individual photographers. DIY Picture Tiles - You Will Never Buy a Photo Frame Again. Lately I’ve been having this huge urge to decorate the house. This is big news. I do not decorate. Arguably, one of the reasons why is because I. absolutely. hate. to. buy. mass. produced. decor. (Also, I can’t ever remember if pink and purple go together or not.) Anyway, this extends to photo frames. You might think, with my trigger finger on the camera all the time, my house would be littered with photos. Nope. Long story short, I discovered this method of transferring my photos cheaply, quickly, and beautifully to something uncommon and unique.

Tiles. The only thing that’s not particularly crunchy about this is that it uses Modge Podge or similar (and I’m not sure what’s in Modge Podge). It’s just grainy and doesn’t dry clearly. Boo. BUT, if you can overlook that one minor issue, I think you’ll love this. And it will be glorious. Here’s how you do it. First, you need to go to Home Depot, Lowes, or something like it. (FYI, I found that Lowes prices on tiles were cheaper than Home Depot.
