The full title of this International Standard is: Information technology — Computer graphics and image processing — Humanoid animation (H-Anim). This is just the situation that was brought to CanAssist by two clients - who required two completely different solutions. The first client, Emily, is a pianist working on her Masters Degree in music. Although she has full use of her upper body, Emily requires a wheelchair and cannot use her legs to push a piano's pedals. Her instructors at the University of Tennessee felt that at Emily's level of expertise, it was very important that she be able to use the pedal that sustains notes. So Emily's aunt contacted a friend who helped search for someone who could help. The CanAssist team set to work, creating a two-part technology: a mechanical device that sits on the floor and attaches to a piano pedal, and a headband containing a wireless sensor that measures changes in its own position.

New media: making art interactive ~ spring 2011: collaborative project Archives. Our original goal for a bus shelter-based game involved interaction between bus and shelter, and/or interaction between two or more shelters.

We decided to prototype that communication with radio frequency (RF) technology, experimenting with a few different options. We also felt it was important to get some prototype elements built that would allow us to test different programs for games or interaction, different switch styles, as well as various ways of using LEDs to light a wall or shelter-sized space. Over the course of the last few weeks, we've been acquiring and assembling a couple of RF possibilities: the JeeNode (an alternative to the Arduino, with built-in RF) and the RF Link. This journey continues, but we were able to get a game prototype up and running for the presentation last week, and it was extremely helpful to get people playing it and get feedback about everything from the program to the switch design to considerations about putting it in an actual bus shelter.
