What is being lost here, I think, is that this was excellent for its day. This was the very beginning of the era (mid 90's or so) where Hollywood sword fights just STARTED to look good, and even now it is kinda rare. As a fencer myself, I can say that with some confidence. There are certainly some exceptions, Rob Roy and Ridley Scott's The Duellists come to mind, as well as a few movies from the 40's and 50's, but that's IT.
