Materials wise you have a big advantage as you can use a casting material with different texture, strength or flexibility whereas with 3D printers it's usually some sort of rigid plastic. Casting materials tend to be a little on the expensive side unless you buy in bulk so I would say it's about a draw there with the 3D printer maybe being a little cheaper. While the option does not exist with rotocasting some of the more expensive 3D printers allow you to print with different colored plastics to make non-solid colored objects but this is not common. Finished (roto)casts are high quality and usually don't need much post processing to be usable whereas most (affordable) 3D printers do require some degree of finishing since they tend to create objects with strange surface properties.

I wanted to build a 3D printer that had a working area similar to my CNC Taig Mill. The printers that came close to this size where WAY overpriced! I did a lot of research on different models and made the decision that I would build my own. So I bought the electronics for one of the most popular models currently available and built an interface to my Taig. I would keep everything on the mill as is and would disconnect the stepper motors from my CNC controller and attach them to a dedicated controller setup for 3D printing. The RotoMAAK rotocaster was born out of the desire to have a process by which Makers could scale up production of parts using rotational casting technology when 3D printing a small production run becomes cost and time prohibitive. The RotoMAAK rotational caster consists of a hollow mold and a rotational device that spins the mold in a uniform motion. The hollow mold is filled with a charge or shot weight of air cure resin. It is then inserted into the RotoMAAK where it is slowly rotated (usually around two perpendicular axes) causing the liquid resin to uniformly disperse and stick to the walls of the mold where it slowly cures over time into the shape of the part.
