For nearly a century now, we’ve been enjoying the modern record. And for all this time, we’ve missed out on the simplest of entertainments: staring at twirling animations on top of our vinyl. Designer Michael Hansen has reimagined the old medium by printing special vinyl that’s covered in patterns. When the printed record spins, an LED strobe fires, creating a hypnotic effect that sits somewhere between a phenakistoscope and a clothes dryer. To create this one-off piece, Hansen was “looking for a visual effect that had a kind of optical art touch.” As for now, the project is artisanal in nature, but there’s no reason that screen printing--the same technique used to duplicate everything from T-shirts to tote bags--couldn’t scale for wider manufacture.
With the music industry’s recent resurgence of vinyl, coupled with the world’s ongoing obsession with custom screen prints, it seems that we could see a lot more of this idea before it dies out. Telle est la description de Mister Lies (qui porte bien son nom, définitivement) sur son bandcamp. Beaucoup de mystère, de mensonges et de bonne musique lorsqu’il s’agit de décrire cet énigmatique artiste basé à Chicago et originaire du Connecticut. Pas d’autres choix pour connaître un peu plus Mister Lies que de s’intéresser à sa musique donc. Là encore, nous voilà transportés dans des contrées bien lointaines et abstraites. Mister Lies crée une musique profonde et minimale, où quelques samples de voix viennent nous rappeler de temps en temps qu’il y a un zeste d’humanité derrière tout cela. Pour s’immiscer davantage dans cet univers énigmatique, il faut écouter son premier EP Hidden Neighbors qui s’inscrit parfaitement dans la tradition de l’électronique actuelle : des basses profondes, des rythmes complexes et un travail de sample digne d’un chirurgien.

Même si l’on savait déjà que la voix d’Asaf Avidan se suffisait à elle-même pour nous donner des frissons, Wankelmut l’ancre dans cet univers électro allemand fait d’une rythmique binaire simpliste, de 3-4 loops efficaces et d’un jeu sur les fréquences. Au delà du vieil adage « simple mais efficace », il offre une nouvelle ampleur à l’original.
