Sustainability and Employee Engagement: Don't Forget the Fun. By Ben Egan Sustainability is a concept that is supported by 97 percent of top executives, according to a U.N. /Accenture CEO study. CEOs like the cost savings that result from sustainability programs because they are immediately measurable.

However, there are bottom line benefits that which are more subtle but no less profound. Chief among these is the impact on employee engagement. In his book “Talent, Transformation and the Triple Bottom Line,” Andrew Savitz lays out how companies with sustainability engagement programs see an increase in employee engagement. If this is the case, where are all the sustainability programs? The truth is that it can be difficult to get employees to engage with them. Gamify your program It’s become apparent that most of us will adapt our behavior in response to non-financial rewards. Most of us are familiar with the way that game apps like Angry Birds or Flappy Birds award stars or medals depending on how well players complete levels. Tailoring the program. By scaling up social enterprise solutions, corporations can promote real sustainability and CSR. By David Wilcox The CSRwire community recently participated in a Twitter chat in response to this query: “What will disrupt your year?” Leading experts gathered to discuss CSR and sustainability trends in 2014. Over an hour’s time, a range of assumptions and common frames emerged. (A full account of the conversation can be read here.) Industry Ripe for Disruption In their breakthrough publication, Competing for the Future, Hamel and Prahalad made the trenchant observation that when leaders of an industry come to share a common set of rules and frames about how things must operate, that industry is ripe for disruption. In light of that insight, perhaps the more critical question to be asked is this: Does the world of corporate sustainability/social responsibility share common rules and frames that make it ripe for disruption?

Framework One: Risk Taking in Sustainability Risk Avoidance Frame. How to tell sustainability stories on social media | Guardian Sustainable Business | Guardian Professional. Just 35 of 113 companies studied used their social media channels to tell their sustainability or CSR stories. Photograph: Rob Whitworth/Alamy Do you ever get the feeling you're having the same sustainability conversation over and over again with the same group of people?

It's a sentiment I've heard a lot recently from sustainability professionals – the nagging feeling that it's time to take sustainability out to the masses if they are going to accomplish the goals they've become so good at talking to each other about. This year's Social Media Sustainability Index certainly backs up that sentiment. In looking back at the year 2013 we analysed how 475 companies from all over the world communicate sustainability. What we found was an explosion in the number of companies talking about sustainability or corporate social responsibility. The missed possibility to influence sustainable living becomes even greater when you consider the potential community reach of these brands. How business has stepped up to the opportunity of sustainability | Guardian Sustainable Business | Guardian Professional.

I set up Global Action Plan in the UK 20 years ago. It's a behavioural change charity which works with leading businesses on sustainability. This year I am stepping down from this role to set up a new sustainability charity. Back in 1993, Global Action Plan's first project was called EcoTeams. It can best be described as a mixture between a green Weight Watchers and Blue Peter. Groups of households were brought together and followed a six month guide to saving money and cutting environmental impact. EcoTeams had been highly successful in the Netherlands where 10,000 households participated with support from the Dutch Government.

What I discovered was that 20 years ago the concept of encouraging sustainability with households was completely off the corporate agenda. In 1993 the leaders in sustainability were local authorities, many of them eager to implement the ambitions of Local Agenda 21 set out at the first Rio Earth Summit. Twenty years later the situation has reversed. Conquering Uncharted Territory in the ROI of Sustainability. Sustainability and Complexity: Are We Doomed to Repeat History? The more complex a society, the more difficult it is to solve problems and avoid catastrophe. Sustainability advocates need to take a fresh look at the challenges if they are to plan effectively for real-world outcomes. By William Ophuls Sustainability as usually understood is an oxymoron. Using the found wealth of the New World and the geological legacy of fossil hydrocarbons, we humans have created an anti-ecological Titanic.

Every effort to “green” this monstrous vessel—making the deck chairs recyclable, feeding the boilers with biofuels, installing hybrid winches and windlasses, and the like—is doomed to fail in the long run, because what is required is a radical change in our thinking and way of life. There are many obstacles to such a transformation, but one in particular is under-appreciated: the challenge of complexity.

Civilization’s Vicious Circle Civilizations are trapped in a vicious circle. For failure. Complexity Leads to Unpredictability and Crisis point. How IBM, SAP, PepsiCo and MTV link sustainability to career development. Which approach do you think is more effective for learning a language quickly: hours of classroom grammar drills or a concentrated period of immersion in the country where it's the native lexicon? With all due respect to academics, most of us would guess the real-world experience, and increasingly, the same can be said about employee engagement initiatives. No matter their original philanthropic or sustainability purpose, pro bono work experiences at home and abroad or programs such as social sabbaticals that combine business experts with non-profits in emerging markets are becoming valuable tools for professional development and workforce retention.
