They create a considerable amount of mathematical discussion amongst the children. Give a card to each student; the teacher decides whether the front of the classroom is the smallest number to the back being the largest number; the children have to line up from front of classroom to back in order of their answers. Line-Ups can be played as a two-team race, as long as teachers give out 2 sets of cards labelled A or B or coloured differently; or Line-Ups can be played against the clock - the class has to try to beat its time on the next occasion.

Differentiation can be easily achieved, as with all games: by giving certain cards to particular children (i.e. more difficult calculations, concepts or wording) by having team A using easier cards and team B some harder ones and then racing! Probably when you were at school. However there is a more informal method which is based on our mental process when we do division in our head. It is called chunking, and is the method now taught in schools. Chunking Let us try 597 ÷ 22. We use repeated multiplication with numbers that we are confident with such as 10 and 5. We still have more than 220 left over so we will repeat this step. We now have 157 left over. We now have 47 left over. Short Division Short division is the method often used for dividing by a single-digit number. We can give each child one 10p coin. If we divide 65 by 5 using short division we firstly divide 6 ( tens) by 5 to get 1 remainder 1(ten).

Let us divide 235 by 6. Chris Moyles Starters. Maths interactive shape games. Upper Primary Pupil Page. Current All these problems focus on different problem solving strategies.

The Grid Method of Multiplication The standard method for multiplying together two numbers with two or more digits is usually called long multiplication.

A Guide to Grid multiplication

However a simpler method, which is easier to understand, and which uses easier calculations, is now taught in schools. It is sometimes referred to as the Grid Method. The Grid Method is based on the idea of splitting both numbers being multiplied, into their tens and units. We will illustrate the method by calculating 23 x 42, the 23 becoming 20 + 3 and the 42 becoming 40 + 2. Number Games for Kids - Free Math Activities, Interactive Fun Online. Year 6 SATs practice: Graphs (1 and 2) It is not too long now before the latest round of Year 6 SATs comes so I thought I would put a week aside to provide worksheets to help with this.

Year 6 SATs practice: Graphs (1 and 2)

Today I have published a page which looks at the type of question which comes up on interpreting bar charts. A bar chart shows the number of birds that flew into a garden on one day. It is very straightforward, with the numbers on the axis going up in twos. The second part of the page looks at using a table to find information and the question asks how much two Nutto bars and one Creamo bar would cost. The first step is to find the correct prices and then work out the cost. The 27p can be doubled to make 54p and then the 61p added to make 115p or £1.15 or 27p can be added to 61p to make 88p and then add 27p. The second page is similar, this time looking at a temperature graph and a frequency of throwing dice graph. These worksheets can be found in the Year 6, Key Stage 2 Maths SAT practice category.
