[Review] The Ancient Magus’ Bride | Otaku USA Strange and beautiful … steeped in fairy tales, danger, romance, and magic…. The Ancient Magus’ Bride is a tapestry of wonders both beautiful and melancholy. Chise, a girl from Japan, finds herself being sold in a mysterious auction and purchased by the mage Elias who has an animal skull for a head. The story appears in the August 2015 issue of Otaku USA magazine, which sports a cover feature on Tokyo Ghoul. It's also got features on No Game no Life, Magical Warfare, and more! It's been off newsstands for a while, but you can still get back issues at our online store. He tells her she is special and takes her in as his apprentice and future bride. In her author’s notes for Volume 1 Kore Yamazaki apologizes for not much happening, but there’s nothing to apologize for. The art is beautiful, with lots of detailed characters and monsters. All the characters are given enough uniqueness to stand out, but Elias is amazing. Publisher: Seven SeasStory and Art: Kore YamazakiRating: 16+ Comments:

Rachel Cotterill: Picturesque Toll Bridges in Wales Two of my favourite bridges in Snowdonia were old toll bridges, charging a few pennies a time for the privilege of taking a shortcut across a river instead of having to drive around. It's always a slight surprise to me, in modern Britain, that these little private bridges endure. The prices aren't high, and a toll bridge needs an operator to collect the charges, whose wages must be offset against any profits (although one of these two was actually unattended when we visited, the toll booth closed for the off season, and therefore we could cross for free). But they must make enough money to remain viable, and so we have the pleasure of driving across tiny, slightly rickety, single-track bridges.
BookTubers: Why a new generation of Australian book reviewers are finding a YouTube audience Updated Wed at 3:34amWed 24 Oct 2018, 3:34am Catriona Feeney studies part-time at university in Sydney and works full-time in marketing — but in her spare time, she's a rising YouTube star. Each week she spends hours making videos about the fantasy fiction she's reading, then uploads them to YouTube. "[At first] I was a little nervous putting my face in front of a camera," the 23-year-old says. "Then I just sat myself in front of the camera and went for it!" She began posting book videos on YouTube in 2011; at last check she had just over 181,000 subscribers. Feeney, aka Little Book Owl, is what's known as a BookTuber — and she's the most popular in Australia. Her recent videos have included her visit to a second-hand bookshop, a vlog about her "to be read" pile, and her personal book recommendations. One video includes time-lapse sequences of her taking a trip to a cafe, putting spread on a cracker, and painting the page edges of her copy of Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. Growing influence

Chatoyant College, Book 13: The Teeth - Prologue: Failure All of his attempts so far had ended in failure. He knew that there must be a way. He was sure he could find it. When everything was so broken, when life had changed so much from one simple decision, how could he not be able to return things to the way they were? He had the power. He just needed to try something different. He carefully closed the door to his room and made his way down the dark hall. He walked down the middle of the deserted staircase, careful to avoid the railings. The door opened to his touch. If all went well, no one would notice anything out of place ever again. He walked to the center of campus, carefully measured out from his map and his knowledge of where the borders of the magic lay. It was clear. He took a deep breath and lifted his arms, closing his eyes to the stars, feeling the magic. He knew that this was the right place to be. He anchored himself down into the grass, reaching below for the magic of his strength. Something was fighting back against his magic.
