The Dominant Life Form in the Cosmos Is Probably Superintelligent Robots
prophesied the rise of artificial intelligence Susan Schneider, a professor of philosophy at the University of Connecticut, is one who has. She joins a handful of astronomers, including Seth Shostak, director of NASA’s Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, or SETI, program, NASA Astrobiologist Paul Davies, and Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology Stephen Dick in espousing the view that the dominant intelligence in the cosmos is probably artificial. In her paper “Alien Minds," written for a forthcoming NASA publication, Schneider describes why alien life forms are likely to be synthetic, and how such creatures might think. “Most people have an iconic idea of aliens as these biological creatures, but that doesn’t make any sense from a timescale argument,” Shostak told me. With the latest updates from NASA’s Kepler mission showing potentially habitable worlds strewn across the galaxy, it’s becoming harder and harder to assert that we’re alone in the universe. I hope she’s right. Related:  Emerging TechnologiesInfo&HypothesiesThe Universe: Cosmology, Astronomy & Astrobiology

US DoD report: Preparing for war in the robotic age A recently released US Department of Defense report, DTP 106: Policy Challenges of Accelerating Technological Change, sets out the potential benefits and concerns of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and associated technologies (as well as advances in information and communications technologies (ICT) and cognitive science, big data, cloud computing, energy and nanotechnologies). Calling for policy choices to be made sooner rather than later, the authors, James Kadtke and Linton Wells II indicate that: This paper examines policy, legal, ethical, and strategy implications for national security of the accelerating science, technology, and engineering (ST&E) revolutions underway in five broad areas: biology, robotics, information, nanotechnology, and energy (BRINE), with a particular emphasis on how they are interacting. The paper considers the timeframe between now and 2030 but emphasizes policy and related choices that need to be made in the next few years.

THE AGES OF URAS - Page AG3 First Inhabitants As we have seen, when the Ušumgal and their Anunna, Mušgir, and Mìmínu (see Races) came sweeping down to the Earth, it was not as though there was no one to greet them. Our planet already had a history and had its occupants. As a matter of fact, Uraš (Earth) had been colonized for a very long time before that awful moment. The Namlú'u had been created here, and under their guidance the Kingú and the Ama'argi Amašutum had been developing a number of primates who were by that time well established (Project Kingú). A couple of points about the diagram: The entire lower grouping is a subfamily that should be seen as nested within the family Hominidae. In Genesiš 1.26, when the Elohim wished to create the first human, they said, "Let us make man according to our Tsélem (usually interpreted as image)." What do we see? Karma One: Enki made certain that his own prototypes were capable of reproducing sexually. About the Šàtam:

The Stanford Astrobiology Course Welcome and introduction to website Astrobiology is at once one of the newest of scientific meta-disciplines, while at the same time encompassing some of our oldest and most profound questions. Beyond strictly utilitarian concerns, such as “what is for dinner?” and leaving offspring, asking the three great questions of astrobiology seems to be embedded in what it means to be human. While these questions are ancient questions, we now have the technological tools to grapple with them at a whole new scientific level. So what is Astrobiology? 1. 2. 3. To fulfill the promise of Astrobiology requires a tool not normally in many scientists’ arsenal: space exploration. This website has grown out of the oldest such class in the country, Stanford’s “Astrobiology and Space Exploration” course. This website arises as a complement to the lectures available on iTunesU and the many other wonderful astrobiology and space exploration related web sites. Where do we come from? Where are we going?

The Navy is Preparing To Launch Swarm Bots Out of Cannons The U.S. Navy will launch up to 30 synchronized drones within one minute, possibly from a single cannon-like device, in what marks a significant advance in robot autonomy. The drones, when airborne, will then unfold their wings and conduct a series of maneuvers and simulated missions with very little human guidance over the course of 90 minutes. Navy officials announced on Tuesday that they intend to stage a key demonstration of the swarm bots from what the Navy is calling a “tube-based launcher,” essentially, a big cannon, next year. The program, which the Navy is called Low-Cost UAV Swarming Technology, or LOCUST, marks a significant advance in applications for robotic swarming software. Getting flying robots to coordinate maneuvers isn’t new. But preprograming a musical flight path for consumer quad bots is different from getting fast moving military drones, possibly armed, to spontaneously and autonomously collaborate and perform missions in the air.

Educating Humanity On the hunt for universal intelligence How do you use a scientific method to measure the intelligence of a human being, an animal, a machine or an extra-terrestrial? So far this has not been possible, but a team of Spanish and Australian researchers have taken a first step towards this by presenting the foundations to be used as a basis for this method in the journal Artificial Intelligence, and have also put forward a new intelligence test. "We have developed an 'anytime' intelligence test, in other words a test that can be interrupted at any time, but that gives a more accurate idea of the intelligence of the test subject if there is a longer time available in which to carry it out", José Hernández-Orallo, a researcher at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), tells SINC. This is just one of the many determining factors of the universal intelligence test. The researcher, along with his colleague David L. Real-life Iron Man armor to be ready by June – US admiral In an attempt by fact to imitate fiction, the US military’s “Iron Man” armor will take an important step towards reality in June, when multiple prototypes will be revealed and tested. According to a report by Defense Tech, Navy Admiral William McRaven said three prototypes of the TALOS – Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit – are currently being put together in the hopes that they’ll be ready for testing this summer. If everything goes according to schedule, McRaven said the TALOS could become operational by 2018. “That suit, if done correctly, will yield a revolutionary improvement in survivability and capability for special operators,” McRaven said Tuesday at a military conference in Washington, DC. Although the prototypes scheduled for June will be unpowered, the military’s wish list of TALOS features is ambitious to say the least. Image from youtube.com @arronlee33? This isn’t the only futuristic suit being developed by defense companies, though. Like this: Like Loading... Related

All About Orbs Have you ever seen an orb and wondered what it meant? Are you aware that different colored orbs have various meanings? The following is research material that I compiled together on the subject of orbs: Orb Chart: These suggested meanings are a compiled consensus of several different color interpretations. source What do the different colors of orbs mean? Orbs of light, or energy orbs, often appear in photographs, on videos, and even floating across our living room before our very eyes. Most orbs appear to be white, but some orbs are pink, purple, blue, green, etc., or even multi-colored. All living beings have auras of various colors that depict their personality, state of mind, health, traumas, etc. source Orb Color Theory Everything in the universe is composed of energy vibrating at its own rate or frequency. The interpretation of the meanings of orb colors relates to orbs that are perceived as conscious, sentient beings. Posts related to All About Orbs

How Self-Replicating Spacecraft Could Take Over the Galaxy I'm going to re-post here a previous comment I made on this subject, because I think it's worth repeating. Any alien civilization that is sufficiently developed enough to span the cosmos, will be so far advanced from us, that we would not be able to even comprehend their technology and in turn they probably wouldn't even recognise us as a sentient intelligent species. I've always found the "Well if there are aliens why haven't they said hello?" argument to be far too arrogant. There are islands all over the oceans of our world that are nothing more than rocks sticking out of the water with bacteria on them. That's us, the barren rock. The alien probes have probably been through out solar system many times (we'd never know) looked at our skyscrapers, cities and agriculture.

Scientist Creates Diamonds From Peanut Butter Diamonds are typically created more than 800 kilometers (500 miles) below Earth’s surface when temperatures over 2200 degrees Celsius (4000 degrees Fahrenheit) and pressure 1.3 million times greater than the atmosphere combine and crystallize carbon into the clear white stone we all know. Synthetic diamonds can replicate the process in a few short days, creating diamonds that are less politically-charged for use in jewelry, electronics, manufacturing, and more. Dan Frost of Germany's Bayerisches Geoinstitut has been creating diamonds out of a rather unlikely source of carbon: peanut butter. Frost explained his process to BBC Future’s David Robinson. While it might sound a bit on the ridiculous side, Frost’s process is allowing him to explore the composition of Earth’s mantle, and even challenge some long-standing assumptions about where some of these elemental components originated. It is unlikely that peanut butter diamonds will be featured in jewelry anytime soon. [Hat tip: BBC Future]

Do Robots Rule the Galaxy? Astronomy news this week bolstered the idea that the seeds of life are all over our solar system. NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft identified carbon compounds at Mercury's poles. Probing nearly 65 feet beneath the icy surface of a remote Antarctic lake, scientists uncovered a community of bacteria existing in one of Earth's darkest, saltiest and coldest habitats. And the dune buggy Mars Science Lab is beginning to look for carbon in soil samples. But the rulers of our galaxy may have brains made of the semiconductor materials silicon, germanium and gallium. In other words, they are artificially intelligent machines that have no use — or patience — for entities whose ancestors slowly crawled out of the mud onto primeval shores. PHOTOS: Alien Robots That Left Their Mark on Mars The idea of malevolent robots subjugating and killing off humans has been the staple of numerous science fiction books and movies. My favorite self-parody of this idea is the 1970 film "Colossus: the Forbin Project."
