We have good quarters and bad ones, we have shortfalls and surpluses, and a file cabinet full of everything from tax documents to lawnmower receipts. If you’ve been following what are generally regarded as “best practices” when it comes to getting your financial house in order now that you’ve started your career in earnest, you should already be well on your way to paying off any consumer debt (if not all the way there), have a 3-6 month liquid emergency fund at your disposal, and be contributing as much as you can to retirement account(s). Once you’re in the rhythm of saving, it starts to get easier, just like how your motivation increases when you start going to the gym. 1. Most banks let you open a checking account for free as long as you keep a minimum balance (often $100 or lower). Let’s say your monthly cable and Internet bill is $100. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

McDonald’s Transparency Campaign Backfires. Prepare To Be Shocked Image Credit: Flickr / Katy Warner It would be fair to assume that there are three ingredients in McDonald’s French fries: potatoes, oil, and salt. But if you assumed that you’d be far from correct McDonald’s began a transparency campaign which was intended to market a more health conscious image of McDonald’s Corp. and utilize social media more effectively. However, instead of talking about their love for the brand, the hashtag became a forum for people to talk about how disgusting the food is. McDonald’s recently released a McRib video attempting to convince consumers that it’s not as bad for you as it seems, but they failed to talk about the toxic ingredients discussed in this article. Furthermore, it turns out that there are 17 ingredients in MickeyD’s French fries! -Potatoes: (So far so good…until you watch the eye-opening video below) -Canola oil: Genetically Modified (GMO) -Hydrogenated soybean oil: Again, GMO! -Safflower oil: The root cause of most diseases is inflammation.

How to Shine Your Light, Even When You Don’t Feel Whole “I wish I could show you, when you are lonely or in darkness, the astonishing light of your own being.” ~Hafiz I keep a prism hanging near the entrance to my home. Shortly after graduating from college, I took a long, brutally honest look at my life and realized that it had become stagnant and nearly joyless. I acknowledged that the lies I told myself—that I was unlovable, somehow defective, or a victim of an abusive past—had created a world in which deep happiness was seen only in glimpses. I accepted as truth that I had not just a right to find happiness but a duty to do so, and I dedicated myself to its pursuit. On an academic level, I did everything I could to ensure the growth of my spirit: I cultivated meaningful relationships; I kept a gratitude journal; I did yoga. Through dedicated action and a commitment to growth, I was able to re-wire my brain to invite and accept happiness in myriad ways. But, on a personal level, my path was less clear. With that in mind, I am able to act.

Wasting Your 20′s With a Purpose: How to Use Extended Adolescence to Your Advantage Once the staples for most people in their 20′s, major life events like buying homes, getting married, having children, and buckling down in careers have been pushed until their 30′s. With a decade of extra time, are we just wasting our lives? It’s not uncommon these days to hear people bemoaning our current society’s tendency towards extended adolescence. From the archetypal ‘man-child’ of Judd Apatow movies to people wiling away years in relationships that they don’t see going anywhere, there’s a cult built around the idea that ‘30 is the new 20’, that as long as you’re in your 20s you don’t need to worry too much about settling down, sorting out a career, getting a mortgage, or finding a partner that you seriously expect to spend the rest of your lift with. I like to think that I made the right decision. So where’s the balance? The beauty of the extended adolescence is in exploration. It’s also much more acceptable to try to carve out your own path. And your love life?

No One Can Make You Feel Shitty Except You. No matter what anyone says, or what unforeseen events happen, how you feel is up to only one thing: How you respond. Let’s get something out of the way first: Don’t let anyone ever tell you how you should feel. We’re all human, and we can’t control how we feel. We can try to learn why we feel the way we do, but we—and we alone—are the only ones who have the authority to dictate how we see ourselves. Eleanor Roosevelt once famously said “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” That concept, that we are the masters of our deepest, most raw views of ourselves, is tough to come to terms with. You know what ole Eleanor would say about that? Our first lesson in becoming someone who sidesteps negativity and appraises ourselves in an honest way starts with, strangely enough, Robert Frost’s view on life. 1. The day, the hour, the minute, the year. It’s not a fatalistic view. You can’t let things get you down. And you’re up for the challenge, whether you know it or not. 2. 3.

Exercise has such a profound effect on our happiness and well-being that it's actually been proven to be an effective strategy for overcoming depression. The groups were then tested six months later to assess their relapse rate. You don't have to be depressed to gain benefit from exercise, though. 2.
