History and Context As early as the 1980s significant research appeared in information science literature about the development of expert systems for improving search results.Hundreds of universities, start-up companies, and major corporations have published research and filed patents on various algorithmic techniques for machine-aided searching over three decades (and earlier when much of this work was classified as artificial intelligence). By the late 1990s and early 2000s, these technologies began to be described as semantic search components.In 2001 Tim Berners-Lee published an article in Scientific American proposing a semantic web evolving out of the expanding worldwide web. Quite simply, the vision of semantic search is the availability of software algorithms that would improve retrieval for the average person by interpreting their native inquiry and returning semantically relevant results. The idea is that something as mundane as typing, “where can I find a gas station in Bolton, Mass?”

Tools - Semantic Web Standards Overview This Wiki contains a collection of tool references that can help in developing Semantic Web applications. These include complete development environments, editors, libraries or modules for various programming languages, specialized browsers, etc. The goal is to list such tools and not Semantic Web applications in general (the interested reader may consider looking at the W3C SW Use Case Collection for those.) The tool content of this wiki is still to be maintained by the community and not by the W3C staff. SPARQL 1.1 Update Graph update operations change existing graphs in the Graph Store but do not explicitly delete nor create them. Non-empty inserts into non-existing graphs will, however, implicitly create those graphs, i.e., an implementation fulfilling an update request SHOULD silently an automatically create graphs that do not exist before triples are inserted into them, and MUST return with failure if it fails to do so for any reason. (For example, the implementation may have insufficient resources, or an implementation may only provide an update service over a fixed set of graphs and the implicitly created graph is not within this fixed set). Why you should start by learning data visualization and manipulation One of the biggest issues that comes up when I talk to people who want to get started learning data science is the following: I don’t know where to get started! Recently, I argued that R is the best programming language to learn when you’re getting started with data science. While this helps you select a programming language, it still doesn’t tell you what skills to focus on. Semantic Web I have an idea that I think is very important but I haven’t yet polished to the point where I’m comfortable sharing it. I’m going to share it anyway, unpolished, because I think it’s that useful. So here I am, handing you a dull, gray stone, and I’m saying there’s a diamond inside. Maybe even a dilithium crystal. My hope is that a few experts will see what I see and help me safely extract it.

Berners-Lee on the read/write web In August 1991, Sir Tim Berners-Lee created the first website. Fourteen years on, he tells BBC Newsnight's Mark Lawson how blogging is closer to his original idea about a read/write web. Standards W3C standards define an Open Web Platform for application development that has the unprecedented potential to enable developers to build rich interactive experiences, powered by vast data stores, that are available on any device. Although the boundaries of the platform continue to evolve, industry leaders speak nearly in unison about how HTML5 will be the cornerstone for this platform. But the full strength of the platform relies on many more technologies that W3C and its partners are creating, including CSS, SVG, WOFF, the Semantic Web stack, XML, and a variety of APIs. W3C develops these technical specifications and guidelines through a process designed to maximize consensus about the content of a technical report, to ensure high technical and editorial quality, and to earn endorsement by W3C and the broader community.
