Trash Treasure: Rome Villa is an Entirely Recycled Sanctuary To paraphrase a rather overused saying, one person’s trash is another’s treasure. The things we throw away are often still completely usable in some way – it just takes a bit of imagination to see their potential. Experimental architecture firm Raumlabor saw potential not only in objects, but in 24 teens from all over Italy. In one week, the teens turned piles of garbage into this impressive building, dubbed Officina Roma. The small structure contains a workshop, a sleeping area and a kitchen, and everything is made of what was previously considered trash. Officina Roma is more or less a three-dimensional collage that one can actually step inside of. Although it was only a temporary installation, the building was a reminder to viewers to think more clearly about their lifestyles and how they too can easily reuse and recycled old materials.
Dream in Green: Small Scandinavian Summer Island House Fashioned from a prototype prefab garden greenhouse, this garden shed sleeps two by night and engages its gorgeous natural environs on all sides by day. Ville Hara and designer Linda Bergroth collaborated to craft the non-residential variant, while the latter creator went on to add solar panels, storage spaces and recycled brick steps to make a miniature glass house (or at least: three-season bedroom) for herself as well. In standard Scandinavian style, a series of cookie-cutter pieces can come together in various ways – in this case, the core gable-roofed, wood-and-glazing element opens up views on three sides while shed-element clutter is kept to the back of the site, away from the waterside view. Inside, a simple pine wood floor and single beside lamp and suspended light fixture keep the entire composition clean and minimal, focusing the eye and mind more on the lovely natural exterior and few elements (a vintage record player and some potted plants) of additive decor.
A Beautiful House Made from Trash & Recycled Materials Driftwood railings line the rickety bridge leading to the cattle-bone numbers next to the front door of this unique recycled home – featuring far more than the sum of its scraps and parts, a beauty that emerges from the textured materials of which it was made (by hand). It starts with stacked corks and bottles, old newspapers, scrap wood and recycled metal … and culminates in layered color-sample ceiling tiles and shards of mirrored glass arranged piece by piece to assemble an amazing interior wall mosaic. Old t-shirts form the floors in one room while an antique wood-burning stove adorns the next and glass wine bottles allow light and distorted views from one space to another. Less an interior design or decorating project and more a work of collaborative art, it is clear that each contributor to the construction process added their own custom (and often unplanned) elements.

He regularly posts great how-to videos he films on his homestead near White Salmon, Washington.
