The d-torso was originally invented by Yuki Matsuoka in 1998 to support his wife’s exhibition of knitwear, and the human shape has been its driving theme ever since. Multi layered stencils or stencil overlays can be used to paint one colour on top of another with even greater results. It's amazing how a simple design can be transformed into something very impressive, and you don't need to be an artist, just follow our simple steps below. We're going to use The Stencils Studio's 4 layered Michael Jackson stencil for this tutorial but the principle is the same for any number of stencil layers. Layer 1 Start with the background layer, Stencil layer 1. Layer 2 Use the positioning marks on the stencil (not shown) to correctly position the stencil sheet over the previously painted silhouette, choose a different colour, in this case grey, paint the stencil then remove. Hydrobee Harvests Water Energy for USB Power to Go by Burt Hamner The idea for Hydrobee came naturally. The co-founders of Hydrobee SPC, Burt and Dane, first worked together at Hydrovolts, a company Burt founded in 2007 to make hydrokinetic turbines for big water systems like irrigation canals. Burt hired Dane as the industrial designer. After Burt grew the company to 11 people Hydrovolts was sold to one of its investors early in 2013. Burt had learned that some makers of hands-free faucets and toilets are using tiny turbines in water pipes to power the remote sensors. And he saw that USB is becoming the global power standard for phones and billions of gadgets. Burt rebuilt a small turbine from a water flow-meter and confirmed that it made over 18V from his home water faucet, enough to charge several phones at once. A laser-cut wooden record that actually plays music If you've ever been curious about the materials that can be used for making a record, you can add a sheet of wood to the list. Instructables user amandaghassaei shows us exactly how to use a laser cutter to make functioning music records out of a piece of wood. And the results are as visually beautiful as they are aurally beautiful. The creator, Amanda Ghassaei writes: These records were cut on an Epilog 120 Watt Legend EXT to a theoretical precision of 1200dpi (the kerf of the cut and some tricks I used to avoid crashing the laser cutter dropped the actual precision down by ~1/6). Here is a diagram to show how Plant Friends operate: The (many) sensor nodes consists of a Moteino (an Arduino clone with an RF transceiver), a soil moisture sensor, a humidity sensor, temperature sensor and a battery meter. The base station houses another Moteino, which acts as a gateway to recieve the RF signals, and a Raspberry Pi where the data is logged into a MySQL database and serves the data to the Plant Friends mobile app. I love plants!
