Make a Maker Faire - Maker Faire Mini Maker Faires are independently produced celebrations of local maker culture. Our Mini Maker Faire program provides tools and resources to help others to make a Maker Faire event that reflects the creativity, spirit and ingenuity of their community. The first Maker Faire started in 2006 in San Mateo, California, organized by the editors of MAKE magazine. Our Bay Area event just completed its ninth year, and has grown into a weekend-long celebration featuring 900+ Makers and attracting over 130,000 visitors. Our other flagship event takes place in New York City, this year with 600+ Makers, and 75,000+ attendees. Other larger-scale “featured” Maker Faires take place in Detroit, Atlanta, Kansas City, Orlando, Silver Spring, Milwaukee, Tokyo, Shenzhen, Oslo, Trondheim, Rome and Newcastle.

Skills and Education for Innovation This strand of the Innovation Strategy in Education and Training aims to identify the skills required for innovation-driven societies and how education stakeholders can foster them. What skills are needed in order to promote innovation at the society level? The research literature on skills for innovation shows that innovative societies require a broad mix of skills. How do the most innovative organisations make use of their staff’s skills? Innovative workplaces typically support individual and organisational learning and training and give discretion to their employees.

handled compounds solutes: Topics by WorldWideScience.org Digital Media Labs: The YOUMedia Experiment I thought that my inaugural post should be on something near and dear to my heart, and my library. The Chicago Public Library’s YOUMedia Lab is now the model that libraries the world over will follow. The MacArthur Foundation and the IMLS will be funding 30 more labs similar to YOUMedia.

Over the last month, I have been updating it for 2016, adding over 30 new tools and refreshing the information I had about the original ones. I have to say, the 2015 version was excellent, but now it’s SO MUCH BETTER. (To take a peek at the guide, scroll to the bottom of this post.)

Biohackers Are Growing Real Cheese In A Lab, No Cow Needed If you're a vegan, cheese options are limited. There are high-quality vegan cheeses out there, but they just don't taste the same, and they're mostly soft-- it's difficult to make any sort of hard vegan cheese, like gouda or cheddar. A team of Bay Area biohackers is trying to create a new option: real vegan cheese. That is, cheese derived from baker's yeast that has been modified to produce real milk proteins. It's the same as cow cheese, but made without the cow. Visual Thinking for Business - Online Course Attention is the most valuable currency in today’s dynamic and fast business environment. How can you clearly communicate complex ideas and project plans? How can you generate interest and captivate your audience? The answer lies in "Visual Thinking", a growing trend that originates from Silicon Valley and the Stanford D-School: practitioners as well as researchers have realised that the more complex, dynamic and electronic the business environment becomes, the more important it is to be able to master such complexity via visualisation in meetings, presentations and discussions.
