1 2 3 1. 8. Formwork desk storage by Industrial Facility for Herman Miller London Design Festival 2013: London studio Industrial Facility has created a range of stacking containers to store desktop items for American office furniture manufacturer Herman Miller. Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Industrial Facility designed the Formwork plastic boxes with a non-slip silicone base to stack in any combination, lining up horizontally or stacking vertically. The products grew out of a project by the duo last year, in which they closely examined the analogue and digital items that tend to populate a desk. "It became clear that the modern desk is an amalgamation of not just the office, but also the kitchen, the workshop and the bathroom," they said, explaining how they found that alongside stationery, workstations tend to accommodate items like fruit, mugs, tissue boxes and toiletries. The Formwork storage system for Herman Miller keeps some of these items on show and in easy reach, while hiding others from view. Here's some more information from the designers: Formwork

Technicolor Bloom by Brennan Buck Technicolor Bloom is an architectural installation constructed from 1400 flat plywood panels to form a double-curved perforated tunnel. Buck is assistant Professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and a critic at Yale School of Architecture. Photos are by Christof Gaggl. Here's some info from Buck: Technicolor Bloom Technicolor Bloom is a kaleidoscopic architectural prototype built from 1400 uniquely cut, flat plywood panels. Stair of the week combines desk, storage and alternating treads in one dramatic sculptural form Stairs are such an important part of our built environment, but they do take up a lot of space. That's why we show storage stairs and often feature alternating tread stairs, which look scary and dangerous but take up half the space. Now Dutch designer Mieke Meijer combines the two with a desk, turning a simple stair into something completely different. © Studio Mieke Meijer The designer writes: Object élevé is an installation in three parts that functions as a connection between two floors while also offering space to work, collect and store. © Studio Mieke Meijer Object élevé is strongly related to previous installations by Studio Mieke Meijer that were inspired on photographs by Bernd & Hilla Becher. The handrail police will no doubt complain that this is the most dangerous stair shown yet on TreeHugger, being a combo of alternating treads, no handrail on either side, and totally covered in trip hazards. Where it matters, it's just a stair. More at Studio Mieke Meijer, found on Dezeen.

Studio Drift: Shylight The installation at the Rijksmuseum can be seen as a performative sculpture that unites the movement of industrial motors with silk chalice structures into a natural choreography. Even from the street, outside of the museum, it is possible to behold the graceful movements of the Shylights: the silk sculptures are visible through the windows of the Rijksmuseum. Studio Drift, Shylight. Shylight is inspired by a highly evolved natural mechanism called “nyctinasty”. With Shylight, Studio Drift is exploring those changes that express character and emotions in an installation of inanimate objects. More than fifty meters of silk, hundreds of man-hours and precise handwork combined with refined technology are used for the realisation of the Shylight project for the Rijksmuseum. Shylight is the result of a collaboration between engineers, seamstresses, computer programmers and all specialties of the artists and designers that work at Studio Drift. Studio Drift, Shylight. « The aim is to create a wood bent piece that commemorates Breuer’s underappreciated chair design while reflecting my own design style. This can be acheived by exploring the various references to Breuer’s piece: the bent wood legs, the emphasis on the profile, and the contrasting materials. Through the ideation and concepting of the piece, the focus was on sticking to these potential reference outcome«

Naomi Paul: Light / Shade Following the OMI Pendant, Naomi Paul launches at London Design Festival the first three pieces in her new lighting collection Light/Shade. The silhouette of Gluck pendant design has evolved, making way for V2 Gluck pendant, an open shade with direct light source. When lit, the characteristic openwork of the handcrafted crocheted surface gives the entire shade an effervescent glow ideal for dining tables and overhead lighting. Naomi Paul: Light / Shade. Vex & Cave are stout yet elegant shades with tessellating 20 degree angled edges. The framework of all the pendant shades, which is made up of two simple metal rings to allow for flat packing, has been cleverly concealed by a double cloth layer, which runs up inside the pendant and is finished with an invisible hand stitched edge. The pendants are all made using the signature mercerized cotton cord developed by the studio. Naomi Paul: Light / Shade. Naomi Paul: Light / Shade.
