Yes, You Can Teach and Assess Creativity! A recent blog by Grant Wiggins affirmed what I have long believed about creativity: it is a 21st-century skill we can teach and assess. Creativity fosters deeper learning, builds confidence and creates a student ready for college and career. However, many teachers don't know how to implement the teaching and assessment of creativity in their classrooms. While we may have the tools to teach and assess content, creativity is another matter, especially if we want to be intentional about teaching it as a 21st-century skill. In a PBL project, some teachers focus on just one skill, while others focus on many. Here are some strategies educators can use tomorrow to get started teaching and assessing creativity -- just one more highly necessary skill in that 21st-century toolkit.

Back to School I've loved looking at all of your beautiful and creative rooms these last few weeks! After working like an animal in my classroom this past week (in between all of those meetings/trainings of course) my room is complete. I've carried over the apple theme that I started last year. That made things a lot easier- although it didn't stop me from buying an insane amount of new things! Here are the pictures I took today at school. Enjoy! Big Ideas What is an essential question? An essential question is – well, essential: important, vital, at the heart of the matter – the essence of the issue. Think of questions in your life that fit this definition – but don’t just yet think about it like a teacher; consider the question as a thoughtful adult. What kinds of questions come to mind? What is a question that any thoughtful and intellectually-alive person ponders and should keep pondering?

Early Years A basic numeral recognition activitiy. Develop your mouse control and number skills by matching number digits to words in the 1 to 10 range. © Tie-Dye Looking T-Shirts This was a big hit today in my afterschool class today – a pseudo tie dying project but without all the unsafe ingredients. My sample had just a couple of circles on it, but these creative students filled their shirts with lots of color, I love it!! 1. I found cheap white t-shirts at my local Dollar Tree store. Each student started by a placing small baby food jar inside their shirt, and stretching a small rubber band around the top. Quiet Book I'm really excited to share this project with you. Several months ago someone put the idea into my head that I should make some quiet books. This is one project that I've never really had the desire to do, but that little seed kept growing until one day I found myself drawing up the templates and then at JoAnn's buying the supplies. It really was an easy project, but extremely time consuming (and I was making two at once.) Here are the results:

Common Core State Standards P-icon for the United States of America (Photo credit: Wikipedia) As a teacher and Curriculum developer, I have been working hard to find out more about the US Common Core State Standards. Did you know that the United States of America has been the only developed country without common standards? I am happy that the states are working together to align teaching standards. Although the CCSS (Common Core State Standards) have not been federally funded or mandated, at least 44 states have adopted them.
