I put together a list below of fun literacy learning with crafts. Ever since I was a child, I was fascinated by this beautiful self-made art -- the instant 'picture' that was created just by covering a leaf with paper and running a crayon over the top. As I grew to become a nature lover, I realized that making a leaf print is much more than just a pretty picture -- it's also a peek into the science of trees. Leaf rubbing is one of those crafts that almost every child tries as Autumn approaches. We see so many beautiful leaves covering the ground that we are drawn to capture both their shape and hue on paper.

This game is simple, spooky but not at all frightening. As I was making it I wasn’t so sure of how we’d play but the rules evolved and we’ve been playing it all weekend . The giggles were epic and the only screams were when I forgot the spiders are fake and walked into the living room and saw them on the floor. This activity works on balance , problem solving and can be adapted for various levels. So fun and, yet somehow, so hard to wrap your head around. . . When I first started contemplating math stations, it was shortly after reading Debbie Diller’s fabulous Math Work Stations. I find that most kindergartners can almost always tell you what things are living and what things are non-living, but they cannot tell you why. And there are definitely some tricky ones--for example, most of my kids think that a tree is non-living. And then there is always the discussion of non-living versus dead. They will sometimes say things like, "The rock is dead. " So I explain that in order to be "dead," something had to be alive first. During this time, the other children are engaged in activities that I've set-up in various interest areas in our classroom. I'm calling them interest areas because they are flexible and ever-changing in terms of purpose. For example, one day children may be engaged in an art project at an interest area, while the next day the activity is more math focused in the same area. I do have a "math" center and a "writing" center, but I'm liking the greater flexibility I have with interest areas.

Here are some examples of the activities that have been putting out at each interest area over the past several weeks.
