Varnish serves as a protective coating for paint layers and has important optical functions, since it saturates a painting's colors and creates a more even surface. However, most varnishes gradually degrade over time, getting brittle and opaque, and becoming a darkened and yellowed layer that can dramatically impact the perception of a painting's colors and tonal values. It produces an intense and a very dark, velvety black line. Unless some form of resin or gum is applied, charcoal as a medium easily tends to get smudged or erased which makes it perishable. It is also used in roughing the outline of a large painting on canvas which is further completed by using something which is more permanent such as oil.
