A laser-cut wooden record that actually plays music If you've ever been curious about the materials that can be used for making a record, you can add a sheet of wood to the list. Instructables user amandaghassaei shows us exactly how to use a laser cutter to make functioning music records out of a piece of wood. And the results are as visually beautiful as they are aurally beautiful. The creator, Amanda Ghassaei writes: These records were cut on an Epilog 120 Watt Legend EXT to a theoretical precision of 1200dpi (the kerf of the cut and some tricks I used to avoid crashing the laser cutter dropped the actual precision down by ~1/6). © amandaghassaei The instructable is incredibly detailed, so if you're interested at all in creating your own wooden records, you'll get a big head start by reading through this guide. “For me, the most interesting part of publishing these projects is to see where other people take them, and the 3-D printed records were just a little too difficult for an average person to experiment with,” Ghassaei told Wired.

BasicTutorial – LeoCAD This tutorial is designed to show you the basics of LeoCAD. You will learn how to browse the pieces list, add pieces to a model, move and rotate pieces, create a model with multiple steps and change the camera position. Through these exercises, you will create a race car and driver. Keep in mind that the user interface is different between Operating Systems, so if you're not running the MS Windows version of LeoCAD your screen may differ slightly from what's shown here. Step 1: First, start the LeoCAD application. You should see a window that looks like this: LeoCAD presents a standard graphical user interface: a titlebar, menus, and toolbars at the top; a status bar along the bottom; and a workspace with tool-windows in the center. Step 2: Start the model by adding a blue 1x4 plate. First, expand the Plate category in the pieces list (by default, this is displayed along the right edge of the workspace) by clicking on the [+] icon next to Plate. tool. to indicate Insert Mode. . and "Zoom"

How to use a multi layered stencil. Stencil overlays. Michael Jackson multi layered stencil from The Stencil Studio. Stenciling Tutorials Single layer stencils will give great results and are very easy to use, simply position the stencil, paint it and then remove it. Multi layered stencils or stencil overlays can be used to paint one colour on top of another with even greater results. It's amazing how a simple design can be transformed into something very impressive, and you don't need to be an artist, just follow our simple steps below. We're going to use The Stencils Studio's 4 layered Michael Jackson stencil for this tutorial but the principle is the same for any number of stencil layers. Layer 1 Start with the background layer, Stencil layer 1. Layer 2 Use the positioning marks on the stencil (not shown) to correctly position the stencil sheet over the previously painted silhouette, choose a different colour, in this case grey, paint the stencil then remove. Layer 3 Repeat the process, it's important to wait for the paint to dry between applying each layer. Layer 4 And that's it, how easy was that! b b

Display - d-torso Paper craft by Aki Co.,Ltd. The d-torso Mini ADAM & EVE Towers are constructible cardboard craft models made of precision laser-cut parts. The d-torso EVE is made of 123 pieces, and ADAM of 128. With no glue or scissors required for assembly, the models are designed for everyone’s building enjoyment. The d-torso was originally invented by Yuki Matsuoka in 1998 to support his wife’s exhibition of knitwear, and the human shape has been its driving theme ever since. The d-torso does not have outer surfaces or skin. The d-torso Mini ADAM & EVE Towers are miniature versions of the original EVE Tower & ADAM Tower.

Blog — TRXL 1. The Trippy ’60s, Courtesy of a Master On a recent morning in a townhouse office on East 32nd Street in Manhattan, reality was treading closely, and somewhat strangely, in fiction’s footsteps. The client sitting in the conference room, waiting for his real-life ad man, was the show’s creator, Matthew Weiner. And the ad man was not just another bright, creative type from the art department. It was Milton Glaser, who — probably more than any graphic designer of his generation — forged the sophisticated, exuberant advertising look of the late 1960s, the time “Mad Men” is now traversing, and whose work to publicize the show’s new season will begin appearing next week on buses and billboards around the country. 2. The old days of studio largesse are over—even for Spielberg, arguably the most powerful and versatile filmmaker in Hollywood. 3. ...Archimedes, the greatest mathematician of antiquity, realized the power of the infinite. 4. 5.

The Works of Dickson Chow | Plant Friends MKII Plant Friends MKII Article Date: July 13th, 2014. Updated: August 4th, 2014. What is Plant Friends? Plant Friends is a plant environmental monitor system. Plant Friends is based on my original proof-of-concept project which you can see here. The Sensor Node The Base Station The App How does it work? Here is a diagram to show how Plant Friends operate: The (many) sensor nodes consists of a Moteino (an Arduino clone with an RF transceiver), a soil moisture sensor, a humidity sensor, temperature sensor and a battery meter. The base station houses another Moteino, which acts as a gateway to recieve the RF signals, and a Raspberry Pi where the data is logged into a MySQL database and serves the data to the Plant Friends mobile app. I love plants! AWESOME! Before I send you off on a shopping spree, lets outline some goals for the system as it will dictate how the system operates. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 7. 8. Who is this Moteino fellow? For this project, we will not be using the official Arduino boards (ie.

Virtual Hope Street - Draw & Code If there’s two things we love it’s our hometown and playing with new technology. This virtual Hope Street project brings together both: you can even see our studio! Brief: Draw & Code have been fortunate enough to call Hope Street our home since 2011, so it was natural for us to select the greatest street in Britain (according to The Academy of Urbanism) as the subject of our architectural virtual and augmented reality project. The immersive technology experts at Draw & Code are always searching for ways to make this thrilling new medium useful and relevant. We are one of the vanguard of developers who are using virtual and augmented reality to advance architectural visualisation. Why did we model such a vast area? Process: We mapped, modelled and textured the whole of Hope Street from one cathedral to the other, all in glorious 3D. Result: For this daring project we sought the advice of leading architects from the outset.

Specialty Fiber - Corning® Fibrance™ Light-Diffusing Fiber Unleash brilliant design possibilities with Corning® Fibrance™ Light-Diffusing Fiber. Fibrance Light-Diffusing Fiber is a glass optical fiber optimized for thin, colorful, aesthetic lighting. This technology enables decorative lighting to be designed or embedded into tight or small places where other bulky lighting elements cannot fit. The flexibility and tight-bend capability of the fiber allows it to curve, wrap, or contour around objects while maintaining bright and uniform light. Also, the fiber is so small and thin it is nearly invisible when the light source is off, thereby enhancing a product’s overall aesthetics and user experience. There are many application possibilities. HP's Sprout uses a smart mat instead of keyboard and mouse For years, the design of desktop PCs has been relatively static when compared to the innovation tablets and smartphones have enjoyed. But now, Hewlett Packard is hoping to shake up the sector with a machine that uses a touch mat and in-built 3D camera as its main controls, leaving a keyboard and mouse as optional extras. The Sprout's projects graphics onto its mat to provide its owners with a limitless range of controls. These can be anything from normal computer icons and alphanumeric keyboards, to piano keys and DJ mixing decks - the only limit is the software developers' imagination. Owners can also capture objects by placing real-world products on top of the surface, allowing the items to be scanned and then reproduced as graphics that appear on the mat and can be manipulated by hand. Alternatively, the machine can create 3D-printer files that can be edited on the main screen before being turned into physical objects or shared with others.

Griffiths, Gibson, and Ramsay Productions Pop-Up Record Player | Modular 4 I found this today on the Marketing Magazine website and fell in love with the whole concept for this direct mail piece. Apparently this was shipped almost a years ago, and it completely slipped under my radar. Ad Agency “Grey” from Vancouver Canada produced this clever portable record player for GGRP that is made from the corrugated cardboard sleeve that is the mailer for the 45 RPM record inside. You simply fold the envelope up, place the record underneath and spin it with a pencil to play the children’s story, “A Town That Found Sound”. According to Geoff Dawson, , associate director at Grey, “It’s actually shocking how good the sound quality is, it took a long time of playing with different materials and designs to get the audio just right”. Grey came up with the idea based on the deep history of GGRP, and the relationship of the audio industry to its roots in vinyl records. Like this: Like Loading...

A Paper Record Player : Kelli Anderson A Paper Record Player Posted by Kelli on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 · 185 Comments I just finished up a really fun project—a paper record player wedding invitation! So that’s what it is. Although this project really begins with Mr. Our little research and development group (comprised of the couple, me, and my better half, Daniel) propelled the project forward through myriad (and oft-disappointing) material trials. The resulting booklet is comprised of a cover, two inner pages, a letterpressed band (with instructions and a tear-off RSVP postcard), and a flexdisc on a screwpost. A major breakthrough came when we realized that the ideal sound was produced when the tented page created a perfect right triangle with the flexidisc. We never did track down the right screwposts. As a fallback measure (if the record-playing didn’t work for whatever reason), the package sure as hell had to look great. Thanks Karen, Mike, and Daniel for being idealistic and working hard with me on this one.

The Hack@ - Organic Malcolm Gladwell wrote it takes 10,000 hours to become a Grand Master in chess. A Grand Master is someone who is capable of playing at the highest international level. In our town, there are people who have spent 20,000 hours, 30,000 hours, and in some cases, 40,000 hours making jeans. Their hands and eyes have been trained in the essence of making great jeans. They are the Grand Masters of denim. You see, we had Britain’s biggest jeans factory on our doorstep. In Cardigan, it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t know how to make jeans. Yes, this town knows how to make great jeans.

howies - Organic jeans Ventile is no ordinary fabric. Made with 100% cotton, densely woven from long staple cotton. Indeed it takes 16 hours just to set up the machine with the necessary 24,000 strands of cotton that go to create Ventile. It’s the combination of the dense weave and the swelling properties of the fibres when wet that provide such excellent weatherproofing. It is a natural product that offers a softer, quieter hand feel, as well as being windproof and highly breathable, making it ideal for our climate. Also, when the sun comes out, because it’s just cotton,Ventile also breathes really well – unlike other water-resistant fabrics, which can sometimes leave you a bit clammy when you warm up. Ventile cotton has been around for a while too. So whatever you or the weather get up to, Ventile can take it.
