Retrieval, Analysis, and Presentation Toolkit for usage of Online Resources (RAPTOR) Download final report1 Given the current economic climate and likelihood of tightening funding, understanding the usage of e- resources is becoming increasingly important as it allows an institution to understand which resources they need to keep subscribing to, and those which they may wish to unsubscribe from - potentially resulting in real-world cost savings. This project will therefore build a software toolkit for reporting e- resource usage statistics (from Shibboleth IdPs and EZProxy) in a user-friendly manner suitable for non-technical staff. Aims and objectives Understand institutional and national accounting and reporting requirements around statistics of e-resource access via Shibboleth and Ezproxy. Project methodology A small development team in Cardiff University and Kidderminster College will be managed by Graham Mason and lead by Rhys Smith. Anticipated outputs and outcomes RAPTOR software toolkit to enable Shibboleth and Ezproxy usage statistics analysis. Follow-on Funding
Social Content Curation | Content Curation Software Finding and sharing really good, targeted content that your Circles will +1, share, and talk about is a chore. That is, if you don’t have a killer tool to discover, review, and post content easily. Enter CurationSoft. Watch what it does on Google+… What does this mean? Aside from finding and dragging and dropping content in just seconds, it also means you will find things people aren’t already talking about instead of just passing around what others are passing around. It is pretty much guaranteed the video that I found and curated in the example above won’t be posted by anyone else on this day. CurationSoft allows you to go deeper than re-sharing stuff that you find ON Google+ or other social networks. What I shared above is not trending. That means more people adding you to their circles and more reach for you. Look what happened in the first 20 minutes of posting the Mari Smith video: Needless to say, a random re-share of an animated GIF won’t get people jumping on it this fast.
Who Curates the Real-Time Web? SXSW was the source of a flood of real-time information on the web. Information flowed from attendees using social media tools to share what was being discussed, their thoughts and their experiences. This information was amplified further by the information be re-shared (retweeted on Twitter) and by other opinions being expressed about all things SXSW. But how is it that you ensure you don’t miss an important piece of information from within your social media connections or even outside of your normal social media circles? It is technology that has made it possible for us to produce, share and consume so much information. SXSW ran a panel covering this subject: “Humans Versus Robots: Who Curates the Real-Time Web? Curation cannot be solved by any one technology and it will require smooth interaction and integration between numerous technologies in order to solve this problem. Business intelligence for research data curation? Gaining business intelligence from user activity data was the topic of a JISC workshop I attended this week – and a hot topic if the activity of JISC programme managers is anything to go by. I counted five, plus a large contingent of JISC service people, and of course Deputy Chair Professor David Baker who chaired this event. The ‘business intelligence’ on the agenda was wide ranging; from Amazon-style recommendations based on other users’ online behaviour; to the potential for hard-pressed senior managers to make better decisions on what services and resources to select or dispose of by mining anonymised user activity data extracted from library systems and VLEs. There are some parallels here with the possibilities of ‘community curation’ to find new approaches to valuing datasets - approaches that rely less on the cost and expense of an expert committee. The implications for data curation are worth speculating on.

New curation tool a boon for genetic biologists With the BeeSpace Navigator, University of Illinois researchers have created both a curation tool for genetic biologists and a new approach to searching for information. The project was a collaboration between researchers at the Institute for Genomic Biology and the department of computer science. Led by Bruce Schatz, professor and head of medical information science at the U. of I., the team described the software and its applications in the web server issue of the journal Nucleic Acids Research. When biologists need information about a gene or its function, they turn to curators, who keep and organize vast quantities of information from academic papers and scientific studies. "The question was, could you make an automatic version of that, which is accurate enough to be helpful?" Schatz and his team developed BeeSpace Navigator, a free online software that draws upon databases of scholarly publications. The efficiency of BeeSpace Navigator is in its specific searches.
Digital Curation = the process of establishing and developing long term repositories of digital assets for current and future reference by researchers, scientists, and historians, and scholars generally. "The advent of affordable global digital connectivity of unprecedented scale and scope has created opportunities not only for more effective and efficient research, but also for new, better, faster and previously impossible research. Curation and management, of research results, are seen as the active management and appraisal of digital content during the entire life-cycle of scholarly and scientific interest; and are paramount to reproducibility and re-use for periods longer than 20 years." ( JP Rangaswami: "Digital curation seems to be a richer form of curation than its analog equivalent.
