Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy Michael Roberts Blog | blogging from a marxist economist Stewart Home Cracks in the Kremlin matrix - Peter Pomerantsev Peter Pomerantsev enters the matrix of managed democracy that underpins postmodern dictatorship in Russia. A society of pure spectacle, with fake parties, fake opposition, fake scandals and fake action: this is the political technologists' project, in which (almost) everything becomes PR. Sometime near the start of this century, at the height of the Russian oil boom, the blossoming of the Putin era, the maturing of "managed democracy" and the birth of postmodern dictatorship, I found myself in a long, grey room on the top floor of Ostankino, the Russian television centre that is the size of five football fields and the battering ram of Kremlin propaganda. I had recently arrived from London to make it as a policy consultant and later TV producer in the rapidly expanding Russian television market. At the end of the table sat Mikhail Leontiev, the country's most famous political TV presenter. Leontiev is best known for the five minutes of hate he delivers after the news.
Salvage | Bleak is the new red. Franco “Bifo” Berardi | Adbusters The Spanish colonization of Mesoamerica was essentially a process of symbolic and cultural submission. The “superiority” of the colonizers lay on the operational effectiveness of their technical production. The colonization destroyed the cultural environment in which indigenous communities had been living for centuries: the alphabetic technology, the power of the written word overwhelmed, jeopardized and finally superseded the indigenous cultures. The conquistadors re-coded the cultural universe of nowadays Mexico and Central America. Before the arrival of the Spanish invaders Malinche (Malinalli in Nahuatl language, Marina for the Spaniards), the daughter of a noble Aztec family, was given away as a slave to passing traders after her father died and her mother remarried. She became the lover of Cortés and accompanied him as interpreter. Malinche is the ultimate symbol of the end of a world, and also the symbol of the formation of a new semiotic and symbolic space.
