About Spatial Agency is a project that presents a new way of looking at how buildings and space can be produced. Moving away from architecture's traditional focus on the look and making of buildings, Spatial Agency proposes a much more expansive field of opportunities in which architects and non-architects can operate. It suggests other ways of doing architecture. In the spirit of Cedric Price the project started with the belief that a building is not necessarily the best solution to a spatial problem. The project attempts to uncover a second history of architecture, one that moves sharply away from the figure of the architect as individual hero, and replaces it with a much more collaborative approach in which agents act with, and on behalf of, others. Although Spatial Agency started out as a critique of the conservative tendencies of mainstream practice, it ended up as a celebration of the bravery, canniness and optimism of an inspiring group of historical and contemporary figures.

Synth-ethic: Art and Synthetic Biology Exhibition — Vienna, Austria Tuur van Balen Pigeon d’Or Pigeon d’Or proposes the use of pigeons as a platform and interface for synthetic biology in an urban environment. Tuur van Balen’s project attempts to make them defecate soap! By modifying the metabolism of bacteria naturally occurring in the gut of pigeons, synthetic biology allows to add new functionality to animals commonly seen as vermin and “flying rats,” turning them into tools for urban disinfection.
Prairie House Northfield Illinois Prairie House: House for a Fashion Pattern Maker and Fiber Artist - Northfield, IL We use sensor data to transform standardized assemblies into highly contextual ones via responsive technologies that are embedded into the building. The Prairie House is a project that uses actuated tensegrity systems, in conjunction with new cladding systems, to produce a house that is estimated to emit less than half of the carbon of a typical house in Illinois while also letting the most beautiful qualities of parametric architectures to flow into the world via physical responses. This work is driven by an interest in using programming as a form of architectural media that is able to transpose new modes of very specialized operation onto standardized building assemblies. Cedric Price CEDRIC PRICE (1934-2003) was one of the most visionary architects of the late 20th century. Although he built very little, his lateral approach to architecture and to time-based urban interventions, has ensured that his work has an enduring influence on contemporary architects and artists, from Richard Rogers and Rem Koolhaas, to Rachel Whiteread. Taking the view that architecture should be enabling, liberating and life-enhancing, Cedric Price’s approach was all-embracing. From landmark projects such as the 1960-61 Fun Palace, to designs for Christmas tree lights on London’s Oxford Street, his projects were governed by the belief that architecture must “enable people to think the unthinkable?. Through projects, drawings and teaching, Cedric Price (1934-2003) overturned the notion of what architecture is by suggesting radical ideas of what it might be.

The artistic ambition of the project, encompassing object based visual art and time based performance art, has its origins in the artist run spaces of down town New York in the late 1960s, and in the work of artists like Gordon Matta Clark and Trisha Brown, whose work was directly engaged with the spaces of the city. The site for the new building is in a part of central Nottingham called the Lace Market, whose history and built form has parallels with the cast iron district of New York, giving the Centre a loose cultural connection to its site. The exterior of the Centre takes its inspiration from the amazing 19th century buildings of Nottingham, and in particular, from the impressive façades of the Lace Market.
