You may know how to draw dynamic characters, but designing your own character from scratch involves a lot of creative thinking. Although many of the classic characters familiar to us all through cartoons, movies and advertising look simple, that simplicity usually belies the many hours of work that have gone into their development. From Mickey Mouse's famous three-fingered hands – drawn to save production time when he was first developed for animations in the 1920s – to the elegant simplicity of Homer Simpson, character design has always been about keeping it simple. Improve your line work with these pro drawing tips What I love about drawing is how you can capture the imagination. It’s the thing that keeps me fascinated. My specialty is hand-drawn illustration, and in particular, the creation of line work with dip pen and black Indian ink. In this workshop I’ll show how I create my own interpretation of Mephisto, the demonic antagonist in the German legend of Faust. I start with an underdrawing, on to which the line work is inked. Unlike digital drawing, inking with a traditional dip pen only allows the draughtsman to push forward. Need a little bit more help with your drawing skills? Marking lightly with an overhand grip, I map where the major elements fall on the page: gestural lines, blocks, cylinders, spheres, wedges, and in this case a few anatomical landmarks. 02. The blocks offer visual cues to lay in the drawing. 03. I refine parts of the drawing, and with the light source in mind the shadow shapes can be mapped. 04. 05. 06.
