Weight Loss Can Lower Levels of Some Proteins Associated With Cancer PHILADELPHIA — Overweight and obese women who lost weight through diet and exercise lowered the levels of certain proteins in their blood that play a role in angiogenesis, the process of blood vessel growth that can promote the growth and survival of cancer cells, according to a study published in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. “We know that being overweight and having a sedentary lifestyle is associated with an increase in risk for developing certain types of cancer. However, we don’t know exactly why,” said Catherine Duggan, PhD, principal staff scientist in the Public Health Sciences Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. “We wanted to investigate how levels of some biomarkers associated with angiogenesis were altered when overweight, sedentary, postmenopausal women enrolled in a research study lost weight and/or became physically active over the course of a year.”
Children with Disabilities More than one billion people around the world, of whom nearly 93 million are children, live with some form of disability. Societies᾽ misperception of different forms and types of disability and the limited capacity of social actors to accommodate special needs often place people on the margin. Persons with disabilities experience inequalities in their daily lives, and have fewer opportunities to access a quality education that takes place in an inclusive environment. UNESCO supports various international Human Rights Treaties and Conventions that uphold the right to education of all persons, including Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1946), the Convention against Discrimination in Education (1960), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), and Article 24 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006).
TEDD - Tissue Engineering for Drug Development Organ-like human tissue models are an important tool for drug development and evaluation of active substances. The TEDD national competence centre pools and transfers knowledge and technologies in order to promote the further development and application of in vitro cell and tissue culture. Through concrete research projects and knowledge transfer within a network of partners from various interest groups, a platform has been created which actively contributes to the development and application of alternative test methods for routine use in industry. The Competence Centre for Tissue Engineering for Drug Development at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences is receiving start-up funding from the Gebert Ruef Foundation. Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection, EBSCO Publishing This comprehensive resource provides extensive full-text coverage for a broad range of topics in the fields of psychology and behavioral sciences. A Rare Drive - Cancer Today Chordoma survivor Josh Sommer brings together researchers and patients to develop better treatments for an uncommon cancer. By Kate Yandell When Josh Sommer was diagnosed with chordoma at age 18, he was a freshman studying to become an environmental engineer at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Chordoma, a rare type of cancer that forms in the skull and spinal bones, has a median survival length of around eight years. The main treatments are surgery and high-intensity radiation; but this cancer is likely to come back, and there are no drugs approved by the U.S.
Inclusive Education If the right to education for all is to become a reality, we must ensure that all learners have access to quality education that meets basic learning needs and enriches lives. Still, today, millions of children, youth and adults continue to experience exclusion within and from education around the world. The UNESCO Convention against Discrimination in Education (1960) and other international human rights treaties prohibit any exclusion from or limitation to educational opportunities on the bases of socially ascribed or perceived differences, such as sex, ethnic origin, language, religion, nationality, social origin, economic condition, ability, etc. Education is not simply about making schools available for those who are already able to access them. It is about being proactive in identifying the barriers and obstacles learners encounter in attempting to access opportunities for quality education, as well as in removing those barriers and obstacles that lead to exclusion.
