How to teach FCE Use of English Part Two open cloze By: Alex Case |Audience: Teachers|Category: Teaching English What students have to do in FCE Use of English Part Two open cloze tasks After filling gaps with one of four choices in the Use of English Part One multiple choice cloze, in this part of the exam students have just over ten minutes to come up with their own ideas for one word to fit into each of the 12 gaps in a short text, with examples such as “The silverback gorilla is not generally thought ____ be aggressive, but there are examples of attacks”. Contractions such as “can’t” are considered two words in FCE and so are never correct answers in this part of the exam. Students must put a word into every gap, even in the rare cases when the sentence would still be correct with just a blank.
