Conflit israélo-arabe - Le Monde diplomatique

Conflit israélo-arabe - Le Monde diplomatique

Gaza's children: 'Israel is creating a new generation of enemies' | World news She seemed to represent the collective suffering of Gaza's children: a little girl, eyes cast down, a tear edging beneath her lashes, blood smeared over her forehead, anguish written into her face. Her picture was taken in the aftermath of the shelling of what was supposed to be a refuge from war, a UN school in Jabaliya. "The world stands disgraced," declared a shocked UN chief after 15 people died and more than 100 were injured. The girl whose image spread around the world is Najia Warshagha, who at the age of nine is already a veteran of three bloody and devastating conflicts in Gaza. Over four weeks of this war, at least 447 children have been killed and 2,744 injured, according to the UN. Thousands more – Najia among them – are deeply traumatised. Najia Warshagha was treated for injuries caused by an Israeli strike at a UN school in Jebaliya refugee camp, in Beit Lahiya, Gaza. Does she still think about it? Her mother, Majdolen, 31, fills in the gaps of Najia's spare account.

Why British people are protesting about Gaza, not Iraq | Lindsey German The hundreds of thousands who have taken to the streets of Britain over the past month in support of and solidarity with the people of Gaza have seen their protests denounced by neocons and rightwingers because they aren’t about some other group of people, somewhere else. The “why don’t they march against something else” crowd accuse us of silence on those atrocities. There are certainly many terrible humanitarian disasters in the world, most recently that of the Yazidis in Iraq, about which we must all feel anguish. Last Saturday’s demonstration was the biggest ever pro-Palestine protest at 150,000. Why do people feel strongly enough to take to the streets over Gaza but not over other issues? Our former prime minister and absurdly named envoy for peace in the Middle East, Tony Blair, supports Israel’s foreign policy. Contrast this with Cameron’s support for intervention elsewhere and look at the consequences of those interventions.
