Historical Context in Robinson Crusoe - Owl Eyes The Rise of the Novel: Before the late 17th century, the idea of “fiction” as a literary genre did not exist. Books were sold as “histories” consisting of pamphlets, memoirs, travel logs, political essays, historical accounts, and even romances and poetry. Fictional tales were considered lies. "Google will be one node on a vast social web" When Chris Messina joined Google in January, just as he turned 29, many were surprised. Why would a guy who'd been so successful in pushing forward the concept of an open and social web give up his independent voice and work for "The Man", as he himself put it? After all, he co-founded BarCamp, helped run the Spread Firefox campaign, proposed the Twitter hashtag, advocated the use of microformats and OAuth and is still a board member of the OpenID and Open Web foundations. Why did he need Google? "I've worked for myself for the last five years, and there are certain things you can do on your own," explains Messina, who recently ranked third in a list of the most powerful voices in open source. "But there were also conversations that you just can't be part of because you don't represent a million users.

‎Google Chrome on the App Store It lets me sync my bookmarks with my laptop (on which I also use Chrome). That’s a nice feature. But it’s so mind-blowingly awful with privacy that I’ve deleted it from all mobile devices. iOS Chrome is completely lacking in every basic privacy control one would expect of any browser built after 2014.This thing doesn’t just track and save everything you do; it presents a list of all recently-visited sites any time you open a new tab... and there’s no way to opt out of this or turn it off. You can’t even delete in bulk; you have to remove these recently-visited sites one by one unless you’re willing to clear your entire browser history. The new tab also automatically loads a selection of news stories, and there’s no way to turn off that feature. It’s like logging onto AOL circa 1996.Sure, you could use incognito mode, but it shouldn’t be an all or nothing choice.

Daniel Defoe Biography During his lifetime Daniel Defoe produced, at a conservative estimate, 318 publications in many formats and on an extraordinary range of topics. Perhaps best known today as the author of Robinson Crusoe, Defoe is considered to have fundamentally shaped the novel as an emerging genre of English literature. Early life Fastest Integrated Circuit Doubles the Previous Record, Getting Following up on a 2007 world record for the fastest transistor speed, Northrop Grumman announced today that it has shattered the world record for integrated circuit performance. The new circuit layout operates at 0.67 terahertz, or 0.67 trillion cycles per second, more than doubling the frequency of the fastest known IC in the world. Northrop Grumman's Terahertz Monolithic Integrated Circuit (TMIC) was developed as part of DARPA's Terahertz Electronics program, which aims to introduce the next generation of high-performance electronics that push performance levels above the 1 terahertz center frequency range.

Lose the Pooch! The Best Exercises for Lower Abs The term “lower abs” is actually a misnomer—your rectus abdominis muscle, or abdominal wall, actually covers your entire midsection and connects at your pelvis. Still, women (and men!) are constantly searching for exercises that will help eliminate that dreaded lower-belly pooch. (We got your attention, right?) The 100 best novels: No 2 – Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe (1719) English fiction began with The Pilgrim’s Progress, but nearly 50 turbulent years, including the Glorious Revolution, passed before it made its great leap forward. The author of this literary milestone is a strangely appealing literary hustler of nearly 60 years old originally named Daniel Foe (he added “De” to improve his social standing), a one-time journalist, pamphleteer, jack of all trades and spy. Like Bunyan, he had suffered at the hands of the state (the pillory, followed by prison in 1703).

DARPA's "Prophecy" Wants to Predict Virus Evolution to Make Drug Biz Proactive DARPA's issued a new "funding opportunity" dubbed Prophecy--it's a program to investigate how virus evolution may be predicted, notionally to improve the way the drug business tackles health threats. But it's DARPA, so there're military issues in the mix too. In the introductory text for its new Prophecy grants program, DARPA notes that "a large number of emerging pathogens impacting human and animal health are viruses," rather than bacterial infections or poisons, and hence Prophecy's task is to stimulate technologies "that predict natural viral evolution" by providing money that advances the science. We're talking paradigm-breaking science here since the note specifically excludes "research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice." It's basically a broad-brush attempt to reinvent portions of the drug industry, for the public good.

Robinson Crusoe The novel Robinson Crusoe tells the story of a young and impulsive Englishman that defies his parents' wishes and takes to the seas seeking adventure. The young Robinson Crusoe is shipwrecked and castaway on a remote tropical island for 28 years. The story may be based on the true-life events of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who survived four years on a Pacific island, or Henry Pitman, a political rebel surgeon castaway from a Caribbean penal colony. This classic tale of adventure features cannibals, captives, and mutineers. Some regard it as the very first modern novel written in the English language, launching the publishing industry. Daniel Defoe published Robinson Crusoe on April 25, 1719.

New Class of Smart "Piezotronic" Materials Could Create Self-Powering Micro-Bots Piezoelectric materials have long been used to turn kinetic energy into electrical energy, but a clever application by Georgia Tech researchers is making those materials much smarter. By adding a gate to piezoelectric circuits, researchers have turned a mechanical action directly into a logic operation for the first time. This approach could turn conventional "dumb" circuits into computational circuitry that might run smaller micro-robots to harvest power as they perform their functions. Piezoelectric materials generate a very tiny charge when placed under stresses like twisting or bending. That charge is too small to power most portable devices, although better and better materials have led to greater electricity yields from piezoelectric materials. One of these materials is zinc oxide, which isn't one of the highest yielding piezoelectric materials available, but it is a good semiconductor.
