The World’s Most Accurate Parser Goes Open Source Posted by Slav Petrov, Senior Staff Research Scientist At Google, we spend a lot of time thinking about how computer systems can read and understandhuman language in order to process it in intelligent ways. Today, we are excited to share the fruits of our research with the broader community by releasing SyntaxNet, an open-source neural network framework implemented in TensorFlow that provides a foundation for Natural Language Understanding (NLU) systems. Our release includes all the code needed to train new SyntaxNet models on your own data, as well as Parsey McParseface, an English parser that we have trained for you and that you can use to analyze English text. Parsey McParseface is built on powerful machine learning algorithms that learn to analyze the linguistic structure of language, and that can explain the functional role of each word in a given sentence.

Confusing words: BIG or LARGE, HIGH or TALL For many learners of English the slight differences between the words BIG vs. LARGE and HIGH vs. TALL are very difficult to understand. For my kindergarten classes – with a wide range of non-readers to 2nd grade reading levels, that included working from the alphabet to learning vowel patterns. I started by selecting the charts that we used regularly and/or every day in a warm up or was handy to keep out on the table as a resource for my groups. I laminated each page bound them together (affiliate).

Weather Sensory Bottles for Circle Time Last updated Wednesday, October 22, 2014 Last week I added a new element to our circle time routine in my two- and three-year-olds classes…a simple weather check. I wanted some sort of hands-on manipulative to keep the children engaged and make the concept of weather more tangible, so I decided to try my hand at making some simple weather sensory bottles. These sensory bottles only took a few minutes to make using bits and bobs from my craft stash, and the children really respond to them. To make these bottles, I used fillable craft bottles I found at Hobby Lobby, but you could use any size bottle you wish. Raid your recycling bin!

ALPHABET RACE It’s that time of the year when teachers can finally breathe again and take an inventory of their toolkits. Brain breaks and time fillers It’s always a good idea to have a few fun activities up your sleeve as a brain break or a time filler for early finishers. Alphabet Race is a simple word game similar to the Build a Word Game or Scrabble, where players make new words by adding letters to a starting word and cross out letters of the alphabet. The aim is to ‘get rid’ of all the letters in the alphabet.
