9 seconds sighting of a Bengal Tiger | Walk the Wilderness The number of wild Bengal Tigers in India have dwindled from about 3,600 in 2002 to 1,400 in 2008 making it one of the most endangered species in the world. Today about 250-300 of these wild cats live in the wildlife sanctuaries of Karnataka. Tigers live in a wide range of habitat, including the high-altitude, cold, coniferous Himalayan forests, the steaming mangroves of the Sunderbans, the swampy reedlands, the scorched hills of the Indian peninsula, the lush wet forests of Northern India, and the arid forests of Rajasthan. About an hour into our 3rd safari of the trip, Vamsee spotted a Bengal Tiger, about 50 feet away, at a small waterhole right next to the game tracks. This image was taken at 300mm, f2.8, 1/800s, ISO 200, 0EV. This image was taken when he broke his canter before looking at us directly. This is our first shot of him as he bolted away from us.

A Family-Friendly Home Defined by 1970s Maximalism You’d be forgiven for rolling your eyes at the mere mention of another family-friendly house. The style is sometimes characterized by cartoonish themed bedrooms, “approachable” (read: boring) fabrics, and the deployment of nearly every kind of storage basket under the sun. But when Emily Morris broached the subject of a new family home—in a leafy San Francisco suburb in Marin County—with Alexis Tompkins and Leann Conquer of Bay Area design firm CHROMA, she had entirely something else in mind. The process began when she and her husband, Javier Soltero, hired midcentury restoration specialists Marmol Radziner to infuse a recently purchased 1953 ranch with new life. With the improved framework in place, Tompkins and Conquer set to work implementing Morris’s vision, using curvilinear forms, sumptuous textures, and more than a few playful elements.

(Feeding) the birds of Shabbat Shirah Every year, the Torah reading of the crossing of the Sea of Reeds coincides with Tu b’Shvat, the onset of the blossoming of trees in Israel. This Shabbat is known as Shabbat Shirah, the Sabbath of Song, because the Torah reading includes the Song by the Sea, sung by the people of Israel in celebration of their redemption from the pursuing army of the Pharaoh. Others also sing. We have a custom to feed birds just prior to Shabbat Shirah because they also offered praise to God for the miracle of the crossing of the Sea of Reeds. Another tradition links the feeding of the birds to the description of the manna mentioned in this week’s Torah selection. I imagine that this custom originated with the annual migration of millions of songbirds and cranes, warblers and raptors from Africa along the Red Sea and up the Sinai. On the wilderness trek and later in the Land of Promise, the migration of birds may have inspired a memory of that first crossing from Egypt and Africa.

Kochi city boasts rich wildlife Kerala is home to spectacular wildlife and tourists throng its tiger reserves and national parks to view them. Yet urban areas too are home to several wild species and Kochi is no exception, according to the city's naturalists and researchers, many of whom are trying to document it. Associate professor in the Department of Zoology at Thevara's Sacred Heart College, Samson Davis P. and his team have been documenting urban fauna within the limits of the Kochi Corporation for the past year. Abin Joseliph, a doctoral student at the college, is now focusing on compiling lists of birds and butterflies in this region. Preliminary results from his work reveal that there are around 70 bird species and an equal number of butterflies within the city limits. While these include common species such as blue tiger butterflies and white-breasted kingfishers, numerous species that are usually spotted in forest areas are also part of this list.
