Poe (1809-1849) had been known in his own lifetime — but only as a critic, not as a writer of fiction. Poe's works, along with de Sade and the recovery of European folk/fairy tales, became the seeds of a sophisticated gothic imagination (there had been an unsophisticated pre-1848 literature of 'Penny Dreadfuls' and a brief British craze for horror stage shows) — which can be seen running through Stevenson's Hyde (1886), the 'L'Esprit Decadent' novels of the 1880s, James' The Turn of the Screw (1898), Ernst's collage novels, Lovecraft, Mervyn Peake, Borges, Ray Bradbury, Angela Carter, to Jan Svankmajer and beyond. ← return to index

French TV for listening practice - Kwiziq French Blog A great source of French listening practice is television. In some ways, it’s better than listening to news on the radio or even audio created for French learners because the language is much more authentic. For example, there will be slang and lazy pronunciation, both of which will help train your ear for talking to French people in real life, rather than just chatting with your teacher and classmates. How to access French TV Obviously if you’re in France, it’s just a matter of switching on the TV and taking your pick from the dozens or hundreds of channels at your fingertips. But what about when you’re not in France?

a photography blog: A (Rainy) Walk in Paris Won't you join me for a rainy walk in Paris? So far, we've wandered the charming streets of Montmartre, and breathed in the sweet perfume of roses at Albert Kahn's garden oasis. This afternoon I thought I'd show you The City of Lights from a new perspective, thirty feet up and eye level with the treetops. Stretching 4.5 km from Bastille to the Bois de Vincennes, the Coulée Verte is a hidden garden high in the sky, perched on an abandoned elevated railway.

Tree Planter Art Installations Brighten Up Torontos Streets Tree planters are often placed on the streets with good intentions of adding a necessary boost of green space, yet they can often become neglected within large sprawling cities where no one takes direct responsibility. Martindale hopes that his Outside the Planter projects encourage people to have more direct participation and interest in their shared public spaces. As he states: “We all have stakes in our shared environments, and this public project directly engages with Toronto’s urban fabric. One of the primary intents of the Outside the Planter Boxes project is to encourage more direct participation and interest in our shared public spaces - to demonstrate that the public can play a more consciously active role in how our city is shaped.”
